Penguin Awareness Day

Tuesday this week was Penguin Awareness Day so we have been making our own penguins out of paper cups, paint and other various materials. The children have enjoyed playing with these in an Arctic scene.

Last Friday, we practised new mark making skills by attaching pens and pencils onto vehicles and driving them along the road. This was a great way to use the children's current interests whilst supporting their fine motor skills.

We also took part in some ice painting. The children use their creative thinking and problem-solving skills to work out how to get the frozen paint out of the containers. We tried warm water, our hands, the sun and even tried putting the palette on the radiator! Eventually, it started to melt and the children were able to create their own masterpieces.

Our story for the next two weeks is Goldilocks and the Three Bears. The children have really enjoyed the interactive display unit, especially exploring the dry sensory plate of the porridge oats. One Goldilocks activity has been to try our own porridge. The children loved adding ingredients like jam, honey, blueberries, cinnamon, and raisins to their own porridge bowl to create the tastiest breakfast! Another activity was giving Goldilocks a haircut using lots of scrap pieces of yellow materials. This helped them to practise holding scissors and making small snips in a variety of materials (from tissue paper, to card, to string).

We’ve also had some really exciting Show and Tell opportunities this week. One child brought in a medal that he’d won at his new football club for being Man of the Match, practising his toe taps and scoring goals. Another child bought his Arctic animals and was able to tell us all the names and lots of different facts about them.

Nursery also had our Pre-Prep assembly this week, which was also about winter and hibernation. The children enjoyed sharing all the knowledge they have learnt over the last couple of weeks. We shared what hibernation means, showed off some of our winter animal crafts whilst sharing facts about them, and even sang a song about getting dressed for snow whilst dressing our Teddington bear to keep him nice and warm.

Also in the assembly, our special leaf of the week was awarded to a child who only came back from their Christmas break on Friday, and has already settled into Nursery life as a new member of the class and has enjoyed exploring the new environment.

On Thursday, we took a trip down to the library. We walked down as a group of four and enjoyed spotting lots of cars, ducks and even some dogs! One of our other classmates met us there with his baby sister and father. It was lovely to see him and his family there! This trip was a really lovely opportunity for the children to explore new stories and gain further cultural capital by using the library. We have borrowed 12 books from the library and taken them back to the nursery for us to read. Mr Phil also came to pick us up in the minibus which, as always, was very exciting for the children!

We celebrated Burns Night on Friday with some Scottish-themed activities and look forward to continuing our Goldilocks and the Three Bears theme next week. Have a lovely weekend!
