Planet protectors
12 Jun 2026What a busy and fun-filled week we've had! Last week, our butterflies started to emerge from their cocoons.
The children were lucky enough to see them emerging in real-time and enjoyed collecting flowers, making sugar water and adding oranges for them to eat over the weekend. On Monday, they were ready to fly, so we took them out into the garden and released Poppy, Daisy, Rosy, Bubbly and Bob. The children said their farewells and we wished them luck on their next adventure.
We also read a story this week called Somebody Swallowed Stanley and we learned about plastic harming ocean animals. The children then worked as a team to free our toy animals who were trapped, supporting the knowledge and understanding of the world and their fine motor skills.
On Tuesday, we put our Planet Protector skills to the test and went litter picking around Otford on our way to the library. The whole class was able to take part and showed great sharing skills with the litter pickers.
At the library, Lorraine and Marianne also had some litter that needed picking up, so we helped tidy up too. Marianne then read us lots of stories about how to save the planet and the children enjoyed sharing their knowledge. We borrowed 19 books on this trip, and cannot wait to read them all!
Our special leaf was awarded to a superb Planet Protector this week, for all of his hard work in learning how to look after our environment and sharing his ideas in group discussions.
On Wednesday, the children enjoyed pressing flowers, leaves, grass and sticks into clay. They looked at the patterns they made and are looking forward to painting them once the clay has dried.
We have also celebrated French Day! We learned about the capital city, all the different buildings in Paris and tried lots of French food. The children loved the pastries, the French Onion Soup was a hit with a couple of children, but no one was too sure about the Le Roule cheese.
Well done to the Nursery class on another fantastic week. Next week we are reading The Hungry Caterpillar and will be learning about different life cycles and minibeasts. Have a great weekend!
