Research and representation
07 Mar 2025This week, Form 5 researched a variety of topics in humanities and science.
Form 5 has spent some time using the Chromebooks to research what it takes to climb a mountain like Mount Everest. They have learned about the Death Zone and the impact altitude has on a human body. They researched the specialised equipment needed to complete expeditions. The class also discussed why they think people choose to climb Everest knowing the risks involved.
In science, Form 5 had to observe and discuss the similarities and differences in the shapes of the leaves and how they are arranged on the stalk. Next, they drew and labelled a leaf. Using Bioviewers, the children were able to use magnification to view plant cells. By looking closely at the tissues and cells of the leaf, the children were able to match the labels about the structure and function of to leaf. This lead to a discussion around their understanding of photosynthesis. What substances are needed, what's produced? Where do they come from, where do they go?
The children enjoyed the various events of Book Week, especially the author visit, quizzes and, of course, dressing up in their World Book Day costumes. They all looked great! The classroom looked a little like Hogwarts at one point, when it was taken over with witches and wizards. There were also some wonderful outfits that were not Potter-related.
In maths, Form 5 used the story Centipede's 100 shoes as inspiration for their work. They had to split the number 100 into various different combinations, in order to sell all of centipede's unwanted shoes to other animals.
