Safety in our environment

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Child Safety Week, 30 Days Wild (Wildlife Trust) and Environmental Awareness

The week started with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our groceries. It really is great to see how much the children’s listening skills have developed and how much they work as a team. Once the bags were filled, we walked back to class to unpack everything and prepared our morning snack.

The Robins love snack time and it really is a lovely occasion where we sit at the table and discuss our weekly news whilst enjoying a variety of fruit and vegetables, crumpets and toast.

A special envelope arrived for us and one of the Robins helped to open it to see what was hiding inside. Once opened, we discovered stickers, a poster and some information sheets. It was, in fact, our special delivery from The Wildlife Trust. Miss Ruby and I hope the children enjoyed their passports and colouring sheets to support the nature activities. Please also have a look on their website for more activities.

We went on a listening walk and time was spent listening to birds and other sounds. We heard great tits and dunnocks and also aeroplanes and trains.

Child Safety Week is a great topic as it’s important for children to understand a variety of dangers. A conversation was had surrounding sausages and grapes and then afterwards, we played a game of Deal and No Deal which was inspired by one of the Robins. Sausages should be cut into long strips and grapes should be into quarters.

We also spoke about how we should treat animals and in particular, stroking dogs. The children understood this very well and they practised stroking their hair as a way of making connections.

The children made a collage using recycling pictures and we spoke about the various items which could be recycled.

We love nothing more than to explore the great outdoors. The Robins enjoyed picnics, yoga, climbing trees in the woods and running around exploring the space. Unfortunately, we’ve not been able to have bare feet time this week due to the weather so hopefully next week it will be dry.

The Kim’s Game modelled lots of rich language and the children did a great job of identifying the missing objects. Perhaps you could ask your child if they could show you our magic rhyme at home!

This week’s cooking activities consisted of banana cake, cheese scones, tree shortbread biscuits and flatbreads. The children enjoyed trying the cheese and by doing so, encouraged them to try different foods. The Robins also helped to prepare our picnic sandwiches and they all did some fantastic spreading.

Next week, our topics will be Great Big Green Week and Technology. We have lots of fun activities planned to support the children’s learning. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.

Have a lovely (hopefully dry) weekend.
