Singing and surveying

Form 6 travelled to Kings Rochester and Rochester Cathedral on Monday, where they sang brilliantly amongst choirs from other local Independent Schools as part of the second IAPS Celebration of Singing event.

The class were not only amongst the youngest pupils there, they were also the only class group (all the rest were school choirs) and the smallest in number. Nevertheless, they did spectacularly well singing Hushabye Mountain and projected their voices and the harmonies all the way down the Cathedral.

As well as the concert itself, it is also worth noting that these children have put in a lot of work preparing the songs for this event both within Choristers and within their lesson time. Zadock was a particularly challenging piece of the choral repertoire to learn, particularly when you are just 9 or 10 years old, but Form 6 faced the challenge head-on and did a valiant job throughout the process. Well done Form 6!

On Tuesday, it was Form 6's turn to share their camp experiences with the rest of the school during assembly. The children had worked hard to prepare their slides and it was lovely hearing how much they all enjoyed the different activities (and food!). They certainly did a fantastic job inspiring the younger children, especially the Form 5 children who will be taking on the challenge of water based activities next year!

On Thursday, the class went down to Horton Kirby to carry out some geography field work. The aim was to create a profile of the river Darent. At various sites along the river, the children recorded the river's width, depths and wetted perimeter. They then collected rocks and stones from the river bed to investigate the size and roundness of the bed load. They measured the stones they collected then used a scale to determine the roundness. This gave the children an indication of the type of rock found and the level of erosion occurring. Furthermore, the children worked out the river velocity and the river's discharge. Despite the weather, everyone thoroughly enjoyed being in the river and doing lots of practical learning. They were very well-prepared and they all did a fantastic job recording the information. Well done, Form 6!
