Spring and plants
13 Mar 2026This week, Form 1 have loved exploring the topic of spring and plants, linking well with our Science Week!
We started the week by going for a lovely spring walk, looking for all the signs that the season had changed. The children loved getting their wellies on, taking their clipboards with checklists attached and noticing all the little signs of spring. We spotted daffodils, buds on trees, new leaves, birds, nests and insects. We then returned to Form 1 and wrote some simple sentences about what we had noticed. We also visited the sheep field and saw some very round ewes but no lambs. We are now eagerly awaiting the lambs being born, which we discovered are due on the 2nd April!
In maths this week, the children have continued to secure their understanding of number bonds to 10. We focused on using our fingers to find all the different ways to make 10 and recorded these on our number bond flower petals. The children are being encouraged to show different amounts on their fingers without needing to count, they are getting very speedy indeed!
Form 1 have loved making gifts for Mother's Day this week. The children were challenged to turn egg boxes into paper bowls, which was a great link to science and changing states! We started by tearing egg boxes into little pieces and letting these soak for a few hours. Then we had fun using the blender to create a pulp. The pulp then needed to be pressed into a sieve to remove any excess water and we then added flour, salt and PVA glue to bind it together. We then lined a bowl with cling film and pressed the mixture into shape, using the bowl as a mould. Once dry, our paper bowls were ready to decorate and the children used tissue paper and PVA glue to make them bright and colourful. They look lovely!
The children visited the Mothers Day stall on Wednesday and the children enjoyed choosing a special gift for their mummies. The lovely ladies of the RHPA carefully wrapped their gifts for them and the children chose the bag they would like. I think they all made great choices!
We enjoyed trying the walking water science experiment this week to learn more about how plants transport water through their roots and stems. The walking water experiment demonstrates capillary action, which is the same process plants use to move water from their roots to their leaves. In this experiment, coloured water travels up against gravity through the fibre gaps in a paper towel, acting as a model for how water moves through the vascular tissues in plant stems. The children predicted that the water would be absorbed by the towels and over the next few days the coloured water started to become more evident.
We have also learnt more about the basic structure of a plant this week and how labels work on scientific diagrams. The children were challenged to cut out the labels, read the words and then label the stem, flower, leaves, roots and bulb of a daffodil. Super reading skills were used as well as getting to grips with tricky scissors!
The children were in fits of giggles as we made our special Mother's Day cards. Our cards used the children's footprints as the basis of the card, so having the palms of their feet painted yellow made the more ticklish of children laugh a lot! Once dry, the children turned their footprint into a bee and then wrote their message to their mummy inside their card. They look bee-autiful! The children also created a special coaster to take home for Mother's Day, using ceramic pens. They could draw whatever they wanted to on their coaster and they enjoyed the experience of creating an image on porcelain. It has been a busy week in Form 1 but certainly lots of fun!
