Spring sunshine
06 Mar 2026This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Book Week.
The week started with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our weekly shopping. Everyone worked as a team to pack the groceries into the bag and once back in class, the children helped Miss Ruby by placing the shopping on the kitchen worktop.
We visited The Farm and spent some time looking at the pond and whilst looking, we noticed pond snails around the edge. The strawberry plants have also started to grow and hopefully there will be much more growth in the next couple of weeks.
As part of this week’s topic, the children enjoyed exploring a variety of activities. There was a mystery on Thursday as something green, round and looking for trouble had taped vegetables to the floor in the garden! Once inside, we listened to a recording on our talking tin and guess what…it was the Evil Pea! This really excited the children and they were super excited to find out more. The Robins loved listening to Supertato and to continue and extend their learning, they made their own potato people. They were able to share the resources and place the features in the correct areas.
Lots of fun was had, exploring the sensory PE circuits in the Russell Hall. Before each session, we warm up by running around and playing the start and stop game. The Robins balanced, climbed and jumped whilst following the circuit in a clockwise motion.
The weather took a lovely turn from Wednesday and it was wonderful to enjoy some spring sunshine. In true Robins style, we visited the Paddock to explore and climb trees whilst listening to the trains whooshing past.
Each child brought in a book from home to share with the class. There were many lovely stories and this supported the children’s communication and language skills as they explained why it was their favourite.
Helen Peters visited on Wednesday and spoke to us about writing books and she read the story Olive the Otter. All the children sat nicely and they each received an animal sticker.
This week’s cooking activities consisted of sandwiches, low sugar raspberry and lime cake, iced buns, cheese and vegetable quiche and low sugar banana cake. The Robins thoroughly enjoyed spreading, mixing, squeezing and mashing. The children learn many great skills whilst cooking and it encourages them to try new foods.
To further extend their love of cooking, I tweaked the Sand Kitchen area outside by displaying many recipe cards for the children to explore. This promoted lots of lovely communication and language and it was wonderful listening to them share and discuss which recipe they were going to cook.
Carpet time supports the children's communication and language by discussing our daily routine and picture cards. It is also great for supporting the children's confidence.
On Thursday, each class visited and moved around the Pre-Prep to listen to a story read by each teacher. This was so much fun and such a great experience for the little ones.
Lots of fun was had riding our ride-on bikes onto the Paddock. The Robins enjoyed driving past the older children and they also gave them a wave.
Next week’s topics are Science Week and Mother’s Day. We have lots of fun activities planned, including some fun experiments. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.
Have a lovely weekend.
