Such a grumpy frog!

We started the week reading our story of Grumpy Frog. which we all found hilarious because of the reasons why he becomes so grumpy!

We also found it unbelievable that he does not like the colour pink! We talked about what makes us grumpy but also what makes us happy too! We all thought the grumpy frog was very kind to the pink rabbit by saying he would be her friend (even though she was pink). We also had a very special delivery on Monday as our caterpillars finally arrived! We are so excited to watch the baby caterpillars grow and make their cocoons. It takes around 3 to 4 weeks, so hopefully they will turn into butterflies early into the next half term. The caterpillars are so teeny and tiny at the moment but busily eating their special caterpillar food, so we are sure they will not be little for long!

The children loved making their frog puppets, especially making a curly tongue by wrapping the red paper around a pen to make it curly. We all decided that we would rather they were happy frogs and not grumpy ones. This week we have been talking a lot about emotions and what makes us feel happy, sad or grumpy and the children have drawn their faces to reflect how they are feeling. Luckily, most are happy faces and we all thought Nursery was a happy place to be!

The children explored colours by driving the cars through the different colours of paint to make colourful tracks and patterns. They enjoyed making new colours with the paint and looking at the different patterns the tyres were making on the paper.

On Monday, we went to visit the sheep and the lambs who were grazing in the field, only to find a poor sheep who had got tangled in the wire fencing. Mrs Sayers and I thought we could help the sheep but did not want to frighten it and possibly cause more distress to him. We headed back to school to ask Mrs Tickner if she could phone the farmer, but luckily we met Mr John who had the farmers phone number and called him straight away. We heard later from Mr John that the farmer had gone to help the sheep and that the sheep was absolutely fine, thank goodness.

What another wonderful visit to Otford library we had on Tuesday! The children were absolutely amazing yet again, walking through the village holding our hands and chatting about which vehicles they could spot, how many bus stops we could count and, of course, our favourite thing to see; the ducks in the pond! This time the ducks were hiding in their house, but we did see some beautiful lily pads and wondered if any grumpy frogs lived in there too! We met one of our Nursery friends and her mummy at the entrance to the library and inside  we were greeted by Lorraine and Marianne. We were excited to present Lorraine with a surprise birthday card (which we had made in Nursery) as she celebrates a big birthday at the end of the month. She said we had made her day! Marianne read us some lovely stories called ‘I Hate Everything’ and another one about a lonely cloud. The lovely librarians had a craft activity for us to do which involved lots of sticky glue and making an animal collage. The children had to pop out the cutouts and then arrange them onto a coloured plate to create their choice of animal. It was a little tricky, but the children did a fantastic job. They then coloured in some pictures of frogs - from green to pink and purple - I think the Grumpy Frog would only like the green ones! We then chose some books to bring back to Nursery and, of course, played with some of the toys, followed by another story about a funny dog. After we had said a BIG thank you to Lorraine and Marianne, we began the walk back to Nursery. We said goodbye to our Nursery friend at the village car park and trudged our way back to school. It is always a slower walk on our way back as we are all feeling a little tired and we were all more than ready for our drinks and snacks! The children, as always, are an absolute pleasure to take out. Their behaviour is impeccable and Mrs Sayers and I were so proud of them. After our snacks, we did some quiet reading of the library books at the table.

Exploring colours with paint continued when the children used watercolours to paint the ice. They carefully dipped their brushes into water and got lots of paint on the brush and then carefully used the brushes to watch the colours change and drip onto other ice cubes. As it was a hot day, the ice melted very quickly and we were left with a tray of water!

Another fun activity this week was to use tweezers to pick up the different coloured objects and sort them into the correct coloured pot! Using tweezers is a great way to strengthen the children’s fingers as well as develop their hand-eye coordination as they transfer the objects into the pots. The children were excited to choose each of the colours for the pots and they even made sure they were using the correct coloured tweezers to match the objects and the pots.

There was more squeezing going on when the children used the pipettes to squeeze the coloured water onto sugar cubes to watch how each colour moved up and down the sugar cube towers! More colours appeared as the colours merged together, so also a great way of exploring colours too!

This week's Special Leaf in Pre-Prep Assembly was for determination to succeed at climbing the wall on the pirate ship saying, I’m going to try again, which is a great attitude to have going through life; to always try our best at everything we do. We are very proud of you.

Out in the garden, we made use of the overflowing herb garden and the tulip leaves to make potions! The children carefully cut and snipped the leaves and stalks and mixed them with water which they even got from the tap on their own by filling jugs of water. Mrs Sayers and I even had some chocolate cereal made for us which was absolutely delicious. It is lovely to see the children developing their scissor skills by using them effectively to cut and snip the leaves and stalks.

One of the children's favourite activities this week was being chefs and cooking with the cornflakes, Cheerios, porridge oats, sugar and chocolate powder! After mixing everything together, they carefully spooned the ingredients into cake cases to make some delicious cupcakes. This activity went on for at least 45 minutes, so Mrs Sayers and I were very reluctant to call them to do any activities with us. There was a very chocolatey aroma in the Nursery classroom and the children looked quite chocolatey too!

As I write this bulletin, we are looking forward to our drama workshop tomorrow, wondering what excitement will unfold! We are also looking forward to seeing you at the Pre-Prep Coffee Morning next week.
