The abilities of yeast
05 Dec 2025The children have been very busy doing practical experiments in science over the last two weeks.
They have learnt about how we use the microbe, yeast, in baking and on Thursday last week, they made their own bread. This practical session was literally hands on and the children had to mix together all of the ingredients and knead the dough and then create their own design of bread roll. Mrs Curling was lucky enough to get a bread roll too. It was a delight to see how much the children enjoyed the lesson and they were enormously grateful to Mrs Carn for all of her time and effort in making their learning about the microbe, yeast, so much fun. We hope everyone at home managed to have a little taste of the bread too!
Form 6 has continued to work with yeast this week. This time they were investigating just how these fungi helped their bread to rise. They set up yeast and sugar solution at different temperatures and then used balloons to capture the carbon dioxide produced from the yeast respiring. The children learnt that if the yeast gets too hot it is killed, so no carbon dioxide is produced. They were also shown that the gas really was carbon dioxide. Mrs Carn slowly released the gas from the balloons so that it floated down to a candle and extinguished the flame. Birthday candles and balloons for two people today!
During Form Time, we loved hearing all about the Form 6 trip to Lille and it sounds like the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves. There was lots of talk about the delicious food, in particular! This week we have also decorated the classroom for Christmas and what an excellent job the children did to make the room look festive.
Looking ahead to next week, Form 6 has been discussing party games and they are all set for their Christmas lunch and party on Wednesday and rehearsals will start on Monday for Thursday's Winter Festival.
