The Robins go exploring

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Settling In and Marvellous Me.

Miss Ruby and I hope you all enjoyed the Easter break and we are looking forward to a busy Summer Term ahead. This term will certainly be filled with lots of fun and hopefully… some summer sunshine. ☀️

It’s been lovely meeting some of our new Robins and next week we will also welcome our final new-arrival Robin. Our existing children have been extremely kind, sharing all the resources and helping the younger children when walking around the school grounds.

Lots of news has been shared from the children’s Home / School Journals. We regularly share our news during snack time as this is a truly wonderful time when we all sit together to share and talk about our news or anything of interest. It looked like everyone had a lovely break and it sounds like the Easter bunny was very busy!

Even though the weather has been a little unsettled, this didn’t stop us from popping on our wellies and exploring the school grounds. Lots of fun was had, visiting the cute lambs on the field. Afterwards, the children enjoyed visiting the pony and they thought he looked very stylish wearing his coat.

The Pirate Ship is certainly enjoyed by the children. It is great to see their imaginative play as they steer the ship to find treasure. It is a great space for the children to explore, run and climb.

Unfortunately, we have not been able to cook as much as normal as it has been a shorter week after returning to school on Wednesday. However, we did make a yummy giant cookie and herby bread rolls. The children are always very proud of their baking skills so to share their culinary creations, we visited Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. They were all very pleased with their tasty treats.

On Thursday, we visited Miss Norford for our music session. The children enjoyed using the African drum and afterwards, they played Musical Statues

In the afternoon, we visited the Outdoor Classroom for a hot chocolate treat. There were also yummy biscuits too. Never missing a learning opportunity, I asked the children if they could identify the shape of the biscuit. Yes… it was a circle, well done!!

It has been great learning about ourselves and our facial features. The children used mirrors to look at their facial features. They were then able to make marks on the paper to draw themselves.

The children have enjoyed making faces with playdough and they used different coloured buttons for their eyes. There are many sensory activities on offer during the sessions and these activities are great for the children’s coordination as well as strengthening their finger muscles!

The most popular activity of the week was the oats sensory tray. The Robins used antique spoons to scoop and transfer oats into different coloured tea tins.

Planting has also been a focus this week and the children helped to plant some more strawberry plants and tomato plants. They are hoping to spot some strawberries soon as there are already some flowers from last year’s plants. Afterwards, the children carefully watered all the plants in our planter.

Cyril also jumped onto the feeder to make an appearance and we watched him as he nibbled his way through the seed on our feeding station. Mr Phil kindly ensured he was well-fed during the Easter break!

We would be grateful for any metal lids you have at home (jam jars, etc) as they have many uses. Please also feel free to send in empty cereal or biscuit boxes for the home corner. It is great for the children to use these as part of their imaginative play as this will also link to real-life experiences.

Next week our topic is On the Farm. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell.
