Science experiments

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Science Week and Mother’s Day

The week started with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our weekly shopping. Everyone worked as a team to pack the groceries into the bag and on return to class, the Robins helped Miss Ruby by placing the shopping on the kitchen worktop.

Once back in class, all the children sat on the carpet so I could explain our first science experiment of the week. I showed the Robins the empty cup and then I placed a tissue inside which was secured by sellotape and turned it upside down. I asked the children whether they thought the tissue would remain dry or get wet and they all said it would get wet. We then took it in turns to place the cup upside down in the water. The children thought this was very good so we removed the tissue and put other things inside the cup.

It was great to hear about some of your own experiments at home. There was a particularly interesting one which involved dancing raisins. The parental support this week has been phenomenal, so thank you for sharing your ideas and experiments with us. One of the Robins demonstrated her own experiment and it was great watching the contents of the plastic jar bubble over the top after adding vinegar to the magic potion.

We have been lucky to enjoy some sunshine so we made the most of it by visiting the Paddock on our bikes. We then gathered together for a picnic of milk, apple and sandwiches.

The children have thoroughly enjoyed mark-making. To extend their interest, I encouraged the children to use chalk and mark-make on the shed. This was an awesome activity as it attracted all the Robins to participate. Afterwards, they enjoyed using paint brushes to wash away the marks.

During the afternoons, we explored the grounds, climbed trees, visited the sheep and looked for pond life in our amazing pond in The Farm. There were lots of pond snails around the edge of the water and the water iris has started to regrow.

Lots of fun was had on Wednesday when the Robins visited the Old Hall to go shopping for their mummies. The children enjoyed browsing the various gifts on offer and then once they picked their present, the children then went to the last table to get it wrapped.

The children also made their own cards and each one had their own individual style. We provided the resources and the Robins chose how to use them. They then made a special present which will always flower and provide enjoyment.

During our Talk for Learning activities, we looked at the love poster and the Robins identified the various pictures whilst I made connections to Mother’s Day.

During carpet time, we reward the children with good sitting and good listening stickers. As there is a learning opportunity in everything we do, I continued to ask the children which sticker they would like. The purple rectangles are always the most popular and I modelled how to ask for stickers using full sentences. Some of the children were able to say, I would like a red circle, please.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of orange drizzle cake, bread rolls, banana cake, pizza tarts and sandwiches. There was lots of mixing, weighing, pouring and spreading. Cooking is such a fun activity and it links to many areas of the curriculum whilst also supporting fundamental life skills.

Next week’s topics are Baby Animals/ On the Farm and Oral Health. We have lots of fun activities planned which I’m sure will be enjoyed by all. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.

Have a lovely weekend.
