Trumpets and trombones
19 Sep 2025One of the Russell House Peripatetic Music Teachers, Mr Maslin, came into the music lesson to talk to the pupils about brass instruments.
Mr Maslin brought in a trumpet and a trombone, explained how to make a sound on the instrument and how the instrument works. If any pupil in Form 4 is interested in having a taster lesson with Mr Maslin with a view to start lessons, then please send Miss Norford an email. Mr Maslin teaches trumpet, trombone, french horn and, if you are feeling particularly strong, the tuba!
Form 4 are studying light and shadows in science this term. They have already carried out an experiment to prove that light travels in a straight line but there was a chance this week to make use of a day of sunshine and create a sundial. Every half hour, the children took it in turns to carefully lie a piece of string along the shadow made by a stick in the ground. They then measured the length and secured the string to the ground. There were a couple of unexpected results, and the surrounding trees caused some problems, but they were
very impressed with the final result.
In maths, the children have been practising rounding to the nearest 10, 100 or 1000. They have also been having a go at answering mental maths questions at speed. English lessons have focused on reading and comprehension this week and the children have enjoyed earning reading lottery tickets by achieving full marks on their Accelerated Reader quizzes.
In humanities, there was time to discuss the reasons why the Romans wanted to conquer Britain and have a virtual look at Lullingstone Villa.
