Types of maps
01 May 2026We have had another fantastic week learning all about the world.
We began the week learning about animals from around the world, where they live, what they eat and some other fun facts about them. The children then enjoyed using this knowledge to role play with animals in a small world set up, looking at different habitats.
The children then practised using their fine motor skills with some playdough to make the shapes of different continents and countries, looking at maps to help them.
On Tuesday, we read a story about different kinds of maps, from hand-drawn and road maps, to family trees. The children then used this knowledge to create their own maps, thinking about things they see on their way to school, or places they go to in their local environments. We followed this up by using a map on our outing to the library, looking for local landmarks like the duck pond and train station to lead us there!
Wednesday was a very creative day. We looked at different clothing from around the world and described similarities and differences between their clothes and ours. The children enjoyed colouring in and painting different outfits too. After that, everybody joined in with hand painting to create our Earth for a display, messy play is amazing for children's sensory exploration! We were also treated to Form 1's assembly about birds. We learnt lots of interesting facts and the Form 1 children taught us how to draw our own birds!
To further our learning about different ways of life around the world, the children have been busy creating self-portraits. They have used mirrors to look at the different colours and shapes they can see on their faces and used pastels to imitate this.
All of Nursery class have learnt so many things about the wider world by exploring a range of texts, songs, videos and activities, including food tasting. Next week we will begin learning about the farm in our new story Cock a Doodle Poo! Have a lovely bank holiday weekend!
