Under the sea

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Under the Sea.

We hope you had a lovely bank holiday weekend and managed to enjoy some sun. I went to the garden centre and bought some more plants for the front garden and also some sunflower seeds. Sunflowers are very useful for wildlife and they are also a great resource for mathematics. We observed the changes from over the bank holiday weekend and the children were able to point to the biggest and smallest seedling. The Robins have planted even more sunflower seeds so hopefully we can enjoy some in both our gardens over the summer.

Our week started with an energetic PE session in the Russell Hall. The children were great at navigating their way around the sensory circuit and they liked jumping on the sea mat as part of our topic.

When we arrived back in class, lots of fun was had, exploring the Under the Sea topic tray.  It was great to watch the children play in a variety of ways. For example, some of the Robins played with the sea animals and others used metal spoons to scoop the rice into different-sized shells. Quite a few of our Robins are interested in numbers so there was something for everyone in the activity as there were laminated numbers floating on the sea of rice.

As part of our topic, I read the story Sneezy Wheezy Mr Shark. The children thought it was very funny when the shark kept sneezing and one of the Robins enjoyed wiping his nose. There was certainly lots of interest this week in the sea and various sea animals. I must say, it’s always great when children bring in items to show during Show and Tell. We had a jellyfish, shark, puzzle and the story Tiddler.

Of course, we couldn’t explore this week’s topic without singing Baby Shark. The children shook their bells and wiggled and jiggled to the music. They certainly had lots of fun and so did we! Continuing with Under the Sea, the children explored paint and made some beautiful pictures which we will show during our Prep-Prep assembly next week.

We’ve had a busy week cooking and the children made cinnamon iced buns, giant cookies, an oyster shell and pearl cake and Under the Sea sandwiches. The children absolutely love baking and it was so lovely to hear some wonderful feedback from one of our parent’s this week. They shared that because we cook so much in class, it has inspired their little Robin to help at home. In fact, he helped to make a banoffee pie…delicious!

Making the most of the sunny weather, we visited the field to see the pony and the sheep. One of the lambs was very friendly and it came up to the fence to say hi. We then had lots of fun, chasing and popping bubbles and then on the way back to class, we stopped at the Pirate Ship for even more fun.

One of our Robins spotted Mr Phil cutting the hedge behind class as it had started to cover the bird feeding station. Miss Ruby picked him up for a much better look and he enjoyed watching the leaves fall to the floor. It has been lovely to watch the robins (feathery kind) land on our feeder and in fact, one is becoming quite friendly and it will let us feed him/ her.

Next week’s topics are Mindfulness and Sun Awareness Week. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell.
