Vaulting into Christmas
06 Dec 2024For some of our Form 7s, the week began at the weekend, with the Christmas Fair and a gymnastics competition.
Friday was the Christmas Fair, where there was a great atmosphere and a range of activities for children to do. The Tombola was a big draw, with queues stretching for miles! Other popular stalls included Secret Santa, The Money Tree and the Raffle, which featured a massive chocolate santa as a prize. Congratulations to the lucky person that won it. A well done should also be said to the team that produced all of the amazing baked and edible eats, as well as whipping up delicious drinks. The event was a huge success and our thanks go to the Russell House Parents' Association for organising it.
Three Form 7 children travelled to Tormead School in Guildford on Sunday, for the South East Regional gymnastics competition. The Boys' Team came second in a group of three schools. The top two teams progressed to the National Finals, meaning they went through to represent the South East alongside Aberdour. Making it to this stage is a brilliant achievement! The mixed team, who also competed in this event, placed fourth, which was also really good. The children performed on the floor and in the vault.
Christmas arrived at Russell House on Monday, when the School Council were invited to decorate the tree in the main entrance. The next day, Form 7 were allowed to decorate their own classroom. The tree was very well coordinated, with careful colour choices to match. You’ll have to pop in and have a look.
On the theme of Christmas, Form 7 have enjoyed watching lots of dress rehearsals. The Transition, Form 1, Form 2 and Form 3 plays were all excellent and the children performed remarkably. The singing was stunning and the acting was breathtaking. Our attention now turns to the Winter Festival, which we hope you will join us for on Thursday.
In lessons and clubs, Form 7 have also been engaging in lots of enjoyable activities this week. Speech Club has been busy planning speeches, which they had to perform to Mr Shield. Some of the topics spoken about were pets, Taylor Swift and favourite movies. The winner was Georgie, who performed her spectacular speech about her family.
In class, some of the most exciting lessons were humanities and science. In humanities, Form 7 found out about how WWII ended, discovering that there was more to it than first appeared on the surface. We learnt that the European front was also related to the Pacific front and how the jungles and seas made this part of the world very different to battle in. In science, children were charged with designing a sustainable container to keep an ice cube cold or frozen for the day. The first photo below is the winning design, as his ice cube was still completely frozen six hours after being put into the container!
