Vital organs
05 Jun 2026It was lovely to welcome the children back after the half-term break and they were all very excited and ready to get back into the swing of school life. We started the week by catching up with any news the children wished to share. Some children had been on holidays and others had enjoyed spending time at home. The children shared what they had been doing and they all listened well to each other.
In literacy, the children will be focusing on developing their independent writing, so everyone sat together at the tables to write about their half term news. They did very well, sounding out the words independently and remembering to use finger spaces between words. This will develop their confidence and support their transition into Form 2.
In phonics, we have also been focusing on using capital letters and using these consistently at the beginning of our sentences. The children have worked hard to write clear sentences and focused on spelling words correctly and using finger spaces.
The children have loved continuing our topic on the human body and this week, focusing now on organs. The children learnt about the brain, stomach, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, and large and small intestines. We looked at a scientific model of the organs and they were fascinated to get hands on and explore all the different parts. During our focus activity, the children carefully cut out pictures of these organs and then placed them in the correct position on the human body outline. Some children even chose to add some food to the stomach! The children stuck their finished work into their literacy book and had a go at labeling some of the organs.
In maths this week we have been learning to tell the time and the children were fantastic at learning new vocabulary linked to this. We learnt about minutes and hours, the face and hands of the clock and even discussed half past and quarter past. The children were able to talk about the times of the day they get up, leave for school, their bedtimes and lunchtime. Using their own little clocks, they were challenged to make different o'clock times. During our whole class activity, the children added numbers to a blank clock face and chose a time to represent, being careful to add a short hour hand and longer minute hand. All were very independent during our focused activity. The children then complete an activity sheet where they had to identify different o'clock times. They were all able to do this and write the times down, ensuring their number formation was correct. They have also had fun making their own watches independently, using card and tape.
The children have continued to explore the topic of the human body through lots of playful activities. Some of these included looking at x-rays of hands on a light box, exploring the idea of blood travelling around our bodies using marble runs in the water tray and drawing around each other on large sheets of paper and adding the organs and bones. They have also loved the roleplay area this week, which has been a hospital.
Another wonderful week in Form 1!
