Water play and heat waves
04 Jul 2025We started the week watching the play Dream On! performed by the incredible Form 6 and 7 children.
It was so special to see one of the children’s big cousin performing on stage! It was absolutely amazing - the children sang and acted with confidence and enjoyment throughout the performance. We think there may be some budding actors and actresses in Nursery who would love to perform on stage!
At the beginning of the week, we have all been trying to cool off in the heat wave so lots of water play and playing in the shade of the trees. The children have loved using the paint brushes to paint with water on the play equipment in the garden. It all looks super clean and the playhouse and Mr McCarthy's fence are also looking lovely and clean after being painted too!
We have loved listening to the story Sharing a Shell this week and how we wished we were at the seaside fishing in rock pools and eating ice creams! The children created a wonderful rock pool with shells, sea creatures, stones and treasure - they then loved using the fishing nets to collect the sea creatures and to see how much treasure they could fit into their nets. We reckon they are all super pirates to find so much treasure! The children have enjoyed the Tiddler story sack this week, looking at the different sea creatures and using the rods to catch the fishes in the buckets. The children thought it was very funny when we watched a CBeebies clip about a bear called Teddington going to the seaside to explore a rock pool - you may like to take a look too!

The clay was out again this week for the children to create patterns with the seashells. They used the rolling pins to flatten the clay and then chose different shells to press into the clay to make beautiful patterns. It was lovely to hear the children share their ideas about what creatures used to live in the shells. When the clay was dry (which didn’t take long in the heat!) the children chose which of the pearlised paint they wanted to paint the clay imprints - I am sure you agree that they look absolutely beautiful.
In our story this week we noticed there are starfish in the rock pool so the children created a wavy sea pattern with the paint and the roller and then added their own starfish. We then made a wish on a starfish which included wishes for a bristle worm, a funny story, a dinosaur, a dolly, some new shoes and a scooter! We wonder if our wishes will come true...
On Thursday, there was a wonderful aroma in the Nursery garden as the children made an ocean. There was great excitement to squeeze and pour shower gel, bubble bath and Fairy liquid into the tuff tray to create a beautiful ocean. The children loved using their hands to swirl the sweet-smelling liquids with their hands. They then added some sea creatures and created waves for them to swim in. This was a wonderful sensory experience for the children and myself and Mrs Sayers too!
We are looking forward to seeing you all next week at our Pre-Prep Celebration for our final performance of the summer - the children are very excited to sing their songs to you. They have been practising on the stage this week in readiness for their performance.
This is the Nursery’s final bulletin for the Summer Term and indeed the school year! Another year has flown by and, as usual, we are sad to see some of the Nursery children move up to the Transition class. However, there is excitement too, to see them carry on their learning journeys through the Pre-Prep into the Main School and, of course, there will be some new Robins and new children to Russell House to welcome into the Nursery classroom in September to join our lovely existing Nursery children. Mrs Sayers and I would like to thank you all for your amazing support over the last year and we wish you all the most fantastic summer holidays.
