We can all be friends
09 May 2025We hope you all had a wonderful long bank holiday weekend. We had such a lovely end to last week (which was too late to mention on last week's bulletin). We decided to go and see if the lambs were in the fields and we met a farmer who came over to us carrying a tiny lamb!
She told us all about Brad, who she had adopted as his mummy had 3 lambs and she was unable to care for them all. Brad was bottle-fed every 4 hours, which meant the farmer did not get a lot of sleep! She was telling us all about the lambs and their mummies and that they go into different fields during the day. We also learnt all about the pony whose name is Stripe and is 20 years old. Another little lamb came over and her name was Poppy. She liked a cuddle too and was nibbling and sucking the farmer’s hand! It was such a treat to meet the farmer and the lambs.
This week we have been reading about Diggersaurs which is a great book about dinosaur diggers! Each one has a name such as Scoopasaurus and they are numbered from 1 to 12. The children have loved learning the names of each of the dinosaur diggers and the wonderful vocabulary such as chomp chomp, chug chug and kerlunk.
For their Special Books this week, the children have been matching the shadows of the dinosaurs to the dinosaur pictures which they have been fabulous at identifying - they carefully looked for the long tails or necks and the horns and the spikes. For our Diggersaurs displays, the children have been matching shapes for the dinosaur collage and making their own diggersaur names by carefully looking at the letters of their name and sequencing them onto the spikes on the dinosaur! They have also made skeleton pictures with the pictures of the bones of the dinosaurs to create their own dinosaur!
The wooden bricks and the Duplo bricks were used for building different models, buildings and towers, just like proper builders! The 3D bricks were explored and used appropriately to make the models stable - some lovely shelters were made for Peppa Pig and family too.
There was a lot of investigation going on when the children found the dinosaurs were trapped in the ice! After lots of banging with the spoons, they came up with the idea of using hot water to melt the ice. So we got some cups of warm water and eventually there were shrieks of delight when the dinosaurs were free! It was so lovely to see the children working together to think of ideas and extend their learning.
It was our turn to present an assembly for Pre-Prep and Form 2 this week, so we took to the stage and presented an assembly all about caterpillars and butterflies! Before we started, the children were super helpful to get the table ready for our display. We showed all the children and teachers our beautiful sparkly butterflies and one of the children remembered the special word symmetrical to describe the colours and patterns on the butterflies' wings. We then read the story of The Very Hungry Caterpillar and we gave the audience some of the pictures of the food which the caterpillar ate to feed our hungry caterpillar. As we read the story, children from different classes and the Nursery children fed the caterpillar each of the pictures in order until he had a tummy ache from eating too much food! Luckily, he had a nice green leaf in the end. After this, we watched a Youtube clip of the life-cycle of a butterfly, which you can hopefully watch too by clicking on this link: Lifecycle of a caterpillar
Finally we sang our Caterpillar song which we have been learning in Nursery and with Miss Norford in music. Everyone was delighted with our assembly and they gave us a great big clap! Our Special Leaf for our Growing and Learning Tree was awarded for great listening to teachers and for trying her best with her socks and shoes. Well done, another lovely moment to share with everyone. We also sang a very Happy Birthday to our Nursery friend with other children from Pre-Prep.
During our music lesson with Miss Norford on Wednesday, we were practising our Caterpillar song and we saw Mr McCarthy at the door who was singing along with us. He then came into the music room and joined in with our song and the actions - Mr McCarthy though we were such super singers we all had a high five with him!
On Thursday we had some visitors... it was Form 1 - how lovely! They were carrying out a survey on peoples’ favourite minibeasts. All the children were armed with a clipboard looking very important and they had to put a mark or tally against our favourite minibeast! It was so lovely to see them and we said they must visit us again!
The children loved creating their very own dinosaur skeleton by choosing which bones they would like for their collage. They then all had lots of fun snipping the straws to make extra bones. The children love watching the straws ping around as they practice their scissor skills!
We celebrated VE Day by making some super Union Jack crowns which the children even wore to the celebratory roast beef lunch! They also watched a short clip on YouTube dedicated to young children about why we celebrate VE Day which explained about the war and how everyone was so happy when all the soldiers came home and everyone in the world was being kind again so we could all be friends.
Next week we are looking at the story about The Grumpy Frog ,who is a hilarious frog who often gets the grumps but thankfully he is happy in the end after being a kind friend to pink rabbit. We are looking forward to our trip to Otford library on Tuesday and the Drama workshop on Friday.
