What is a story machine?
14 Mar 2025Our story this week has been all about the story machine which, to those who can remember, is a typewriter!
It has been fascinating to watch the children tap the keys to print the letters and numbers to make stories or names just like the little boy Elliot in the story. Each of the children loved listening for the ting of the bell when it is time to move the paper up to continue to type and they have enjoyed trying to find the initial of their name on the keys. A big thank you to Mr John who fixed the ribbon for us so we can use it.
This week the children have been busy drawing pictures just like Elliot in our story. They have created some beautiful paintings and drawings using a range of different media. They enjoyed using the watercolour paints by carefully dipping the brushes into water and then choosing which colour paint to add to their brush. They all had a fun time drawing pictures on the long roll of paper and they drew some amazing pictures including a fire engine, a spider, a scary monster and a magic bean. It was lovely to see all the children so engaged in their work.
For Science Week, we were learning all about change and adapt. The children explored colours when they used the pipettes to squeeze the coloured water over the cotton wool balls to create beautiful rainbows. There was a lot of concentration to squeeze the ends of the pipettes to draw the coloured water up to then carefully squeeze onto the cotton wool. We are sure you agree that they are beautiful coloured rainbows! The children have also loved doing deep sea yoga discovery combining physical movement with learning about marine life, promoting both physical wellness and environmental awareness. We listened to wave music and we spoke about starfish regenerating lost limbs, how jellyfish move with the ocean currents and how penguins huddle together to keep warm. The children may show you some of the yoga poses at home! I think our favourite was the penguins trying to keep warm. We hope you like the photos of us all taking part in the yoga poses. As part of science week, the children created an animal using the junk boxes and they added different body parts to make different animals with tails and googly eyes.
On Tuesday we all enjoyed our walk through the village to the library - we always love to look for the ducks on the pond and check that Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len are not in there (the bad men from one of our favourite stories). It was lovely to visit the library after celebrating Book Week at school as we know we can choose more books to bring back to Nursery. As usual, Lorriane and Marianne were there to greet us and our Nursery friend arrived with his Mummy and straight away we took part in an Easter Hunt around the library. The children all had their own Easter sheet and they carefully hunted around the library to find all the different Easter bunnies, chicks and eggs. Some pictures were so well hidden that we had to ask Marianne for clues!
After we had found all the pictures and carefully ticked them off on our sheets we sat and had two stories with Marianne. The children sat beautifully and were confident and keen to answer any questions about the stories. After the stories, the children were asked to colour in some pictures of chicks and Easter eggs for the spring display tree in the library, which we all thought looked fantastic! We had been so busy that there was just enough time for the children to choose some books to bring back to Nursery before we started walking back to school. The children are always so impeccably behaved when we visit the library and are so good at holding our hands and walking there and back. Thank you to Mrs Parmenter, who helped walk the children with us. We were all ready for our snacks when we returned and enjoyed looking at the books we had chosen.
The children have been learning about symmetry this week using the CTOUCH board. They carefully looked at each of the pictures, shapes and patterns to choose the correct symmetrical picture and clicked the check box to see if they had chosen the right one. Some of them were very tricky, Mrs Sayers and I were very impressed with their understanding of symmetrical patterns.
What a special shopping trip we had on Wednesday, when we set off with our Russell Bucks in hand to choose a special gift for Mother’s Day. The children confidently told the lovely helpers their names before choosing something special from the wonderful choice of gifts. They then took them to be wrapped in colourful tissue before having their photo taken in the hall, proudly showing their gift bags. We hope the gifts are hidden away for the special day... no peeping, mummies!
We loved watching Transition's Pre-Prep Assembly this week about a little duck who felt he was no good at anything until he was the hero by saving the duckling who was trapped in a pipe. We all thoroughly enjoyed their acting and we thought of all the things which we are good at. Our Special Leaf this week was for having the confidence to jump off the high tricky apparatus at gymnastics. We were super proud to see another leaf for our Growing and Learning tree.
We are looking forward to Sue Hendra visiting on Friday, when we have a book assembly and a workshop. I will include all the exciting details about her visit in next week's bulletin.
Next week our story is all about the Tiger Who Came to Tea and we are super excited about the Easter Egg Hunt on Tuesday.
