Winter birds

We have had another exciting week in Nursery, continuing our learning about winter and birds

We ended last week by creating (and tasting!) our own rocky road. The children loved breaking and smashing up the biscuits, then mixing them with the chocolate and marshmallows, before putting it in the fridge to set.

Last Friday, we also went to our first PE session of the year. We explored new equipment, practised our balancing skills and learnt how to jump with two feet.

This week, we have continued to learn about birds for our bird watching theme. Our favourite activity was making our own bird feeders. The children mashed up bananas, stuffed it into all the gaps on pine-cones, then rolled them and sprinkled bird seeds and meal-worms before leaving them to dry. We have hung these up in our nursery garden, with a hidden nature camera, to hopefully spot some of the wildlife enjoying the snacks that we made for them!

We have also continued to learn about winter this week. The children have all been working hard on their maths skills in our weekly worksheet. They had to count different winter objects in an I Spy game and write down how many they found. This was a great way to support a range of levels in numbers, from counting objects to number recognition and representation. Our special leaf for this week was given out to somebody who worked incredibly hard on this activity, taking extra care to copy the numbers as best he could.

The children also really enjoyed learning about igloos this week. We looked at different pictures of various snow structures, paying attention to the shapes we could see. They then explored using various materials to build their own igloos, including sugar cubes, foam packaging, shaving foam and frozen oobleck. This helped their imagination and problem solving skills, in fact discovering that combing the resources together helped everything to stick together - until the oobleck melted, that is!

With the recent gloomy weather, we haven't been able to go outside as much as we usually would, so we've been keeping ourselves active by doing lots of dancing and exercise indoors. The children have been enjoying dances about colours, cowboys and superheroes!

Next week, our story changes to Goldilocks and the Three Bears, and we will also be celebrating Penguin Awareness Day, Squirrel Awareness Day, Burns Night and we have our library trip on Thursday - what a busy week ahead! Have a lovely weekend.
