Winter sleep

Happy New Year! The children have had an amazing first week back and have all jumped straight into learning.

They have all come in wearing some amazing outfits to contribute to the School Council's fundraising Own Clothes Week event. From celebrities and sports people to pyjamas, we've loved seeing all their different costumes.

Our first special leaf of the year was awarded to a child who has done an incredible job of learning to use the toilet over the Christmas holiday, returning to school out of nappies and has had no accidents!

We have started the year with our first event, Big School's Birdwatch, which we will be continuing to learn about until February 13th. So far we have been on a birdwatching walk with our binoculars, looked at different kinds of birds and what they look like whilst drawing them, and have even been collecting natural resources we have found around the school to build our own nest. The children also enjoyed practising their small motor skills in the sand tray, using the tweezers to pick out worms and feed them to the baby bird.

The first story we are looking at this year is called Winter Sleep and it has been helping the children to learn about the changes we see from autumn to winter and what happens to all the animals.

Our key word of the week has been hibernation and they have loved learning about the different types of dens all the animals sleep in. On a walk around the school, we looked for nests and dens and the children used their quiet feet so as not to disturb any animals and we found 4 holes leading to underground houses!

The frosty weather and flurries of snow have also given us great learning opportunities this week. We have looked at ice around the garden and learnt about melting, completed a cutting and sticking activity about what clothes we should wear when it's cold, and have had lots of conversations about the weather and seasons.

Next week we will continue to focus on our winter topic, as well as exploring National Houseplant Week. Wishing you all a lovely weekend!
