30 days wild

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were 30 Days Wild and Child Safety.

We started the week with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our weekly groceries from the pop-up shop. The children did a great job of packing everything in reusable bags, before making our way back to class. There was something new in this week’s shopping, something green and something round. Not an Evil Pea but a watermelon.

During carpet time, the Robins helped to open our special letter from The Wildlife Trust. Inside was lots of information about 30 Days Wild, a planner, stickers and some seeds. The children thoroughly enjoyed using their identification sheets to spot birds around the school grounds. In fact, we saw a thrush on The Paddock.

As part of this week’s topics, the Robins had lots of fun playing The Kim’s Game with Miss Ruby. The first half of the week, the children enjoyed remembering the missing safety objects and they also learnt some new words. On the first tray was: a stapler, glue stick, scissors and a knife. All the children took turns to identify the missing object. Towards the end of the week, Miss Ruby swapped the items for a nature-themed tray.

To support the children’s fine motor control, there was a Marvel and Frozen craft sticking activity. There was so much interest that we had to add more chairs! The children carefully added glue to stick the pictures onto paper.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of decorating biscuits with a variety of toppings. I spoke to the children about marshmallows and explained that it is best to cut them into little pieces due to choking. There was lots of persevering when knives were used to chop pepper and also chopping fruit for our smoothies. The children are much more confident when using the smoothie maker, especially as it’s quite noisy. Pizza is always a fond favourite and as a special treat, we tried some yummy cheese.

As a special treat, we all sat outside on Wednesday afternoon to enjoy a milkshake made with our delicious chopped and blended fruits. In fact, we used the same recipe to make lollies and they were enjoyed by all.

The CTouch was used to watch mindfulness moments and the children were able to sit and listen to the sounds of nature. We also watched Alan Titmars sow some seeds and this helped us to understand what we needed to do with our special 30 Days Wild seeds. The Robins are looking forward to sowing them next week.

The bird feeding station was very busy this week. Cyril the Squirrel, Percy the Pigeon and a little robin nibbled and pecked their way through the seed.

Sports Day will soon be here so it’s never too early to practise. Miss Ruby and I were super impressed with the children’s listening ears. We also have some very competitive children. The Circle Relay is their favourite and it is great to hear the children cheer each other as they run around the circle. Well done, Robins!

Thank you so much for supporting our weekly topics. It was great to see that one of our Robins brought in some seeds from home to share during carpet time. Another Robin, brought in a book about child safety. It’s great to work together to support the children and by working together, we can extend the children's learning.

Our Talk for Learning consisted of looking at food safety posters. The children understand that grapes should be cut into quarters, as should cherry tomatoes and rather large blueberries. Sausages should be cut into long strips and so should bananas.

On Thursday, Mr Phil popped into class to discuss safety in the car park. He wore his special high visibility jacket and explained that the right thing is to hold a grown-ups hand when crossing the road or in the car park. In the afternoon, we popped on our all-in-one waterproof suits and ventured around the school grounds. Afterwards, we enjoyed a smoothie ice-lolly on the benches overlooking the North Downs

Our topics for next week are Road Safety, Healthy Eating and Father’s Day. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell.
