A few of my favourite things

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was My Favourite Things.

Our first activity of the week was to visit the Old Hall and collect our shopping at the pop up shop. The children all worked hard to pack all the groceries into reusable bags. On our return to class, we spoke about the different types of fruit and vegetables with lots of open-ended questions. It is really important for our Robins to feel secure when they transition to school, so it was wonderful to see their favourite things for Show and Tell. Aeroplanes were certainly a fond favourite and also tractors. There might be a surprise for the children soon so watch this space!

The Gruffalo was hiding in one of the Robin’s bookbags, along with some Gruffalo food. Following the children’s interests, the children enjoyed watching the song on the CTouch. It was great watching their actions as they danced along.

On Monday and Tuesday, the Robins enjoyed exploring the sensory PE circuits in the Russell Hall. There was lots of balancing, jumping and even…swimming! It’s important for children to use their whole bodies, so I demonstrated on the blue mat (sea) how to swim. The Robins thought this was great and they all joined in!

We have quite a few siblings this term in class and it is nice when they see their siblings around school. One of our Robins saw his sister in Transition and gave her a big high-five.

In Scrimbling, the children bopped and boogied away whilst making marks to music. This was certainly lots of fun and they thoroughly enjoyed using stickers. Stickers are a great way to support children’s fine motor development and there were lots of different-sized stickers for all abilities.

It has been great to see the enjoyment in the new Robins’ faces when taking part in our weekly cooking activities. Miss Ruby and I do hope that you managed to have a cheeky taste. Their culinary creations always smell so wonderful! We made a couple of trips to deliver our creations to Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. They were all super pleased with their bakes and enjoyed them with a nice cup of tea. Each week, the children make bread rolls which is a great activity for working those finger muscles. Cinnamon buns were also made, along with a yummy minty traybake. The children’s favourite toppings were added which included chocolate buttons and sprinkles.

We love exploring the school grounds and this week the children enjoyed trips to The Farm, school field and the Outdoor Classroom. We are certainly very lucky to have such wonderful views and it is truly magical to listen to the many sounds of nature as we roam around the grounds. Being very close to Otford Station is certainly a treat for the children, especially when a train goes whooshing past. In fact, we waved to a train as it sped past whilst we were enjoying a hot chocolate treat.

The Robins love riding scooters and pushing pushchairs so we took a little trip to the playground. The children were all very sensible and there was lots of good driving and good steering

In music, we have started to learn our Harvest songs. This is also adding to the children’s interests in tractors and combine harvesters. The Robins are learning many actions to accompany the songs so you’ll all be in for a lovely treat when Harvest arrives for the whole school.

You may have noticed that the children’s good sitting and good listening stickers have changed shape. I thought it would be a nice idea to introduce different shapes. We have therefore moved from stars to circles. With this in mind, break a round biscuit in half and ask your child to recall the shape… they have learnt all about semi-circles! Well done, Robins!

Lastly, thank you for your continued support with our weekly topics. It is much appreciated as it supports the children’s learning.

Next week’s topic is Seed Gathering. We have lots of fun activities planned and there might be something exciting for you to take home for next spring. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!). Have a lovely weekend.
