A roarsome week

What a roarsome week we have had in Transition learning all about dinosaurs!

We began the week by reading Dinosaur Douglas and the Beastly Bugs, which was an exciting story all about brushing our teeth. The children shared some fantastic tips on how to keep our teeth clean, such as brushing them twice a day, and only eating sweets once a week. Just like Dinosaur Douglas, we realised that the dinosaurs in Transition had very dirty teeth, so we got out the toothbrushes, opened up the toothpaste and gave their teeth a good clean. The children were superstars, remembering to brush up and down, round and round, and not to wash the toothpaste of the teeth when they had finished.

Continuing our dinosaur theme, we used dried pasta to create our own dinosaur skeleton pictures, working out where the bones should go. The children made some fantastic pictures, some even had three heads! We used magnifying glasses to help us explore the dinosaur fossils that we found in the sandpit, after we carefully brushed all the sand off with our small paint brushes. We also practised our fine motor skills as we assembled our dinosaur robots, carefully screwing and unscrewing the different features using our screwdrivers. These were very popular with the children, and although they were a bit tricky, Transition did not give up! We even put on our archeologist hats as we excavated and cleaned our own dinosaur bones. It was hard to work out which kind of dinosaur they came from, but the dinosaur experts in the class helped us to work it out!

We continued to explore dinosaurs in our maths focus this week, as we investigated the composition of numbers to 5. The dinosaurs had created nests for us, labelled with numbers up to 5. We had to work out which 2 eggs we could put in each nest, by counting the dots on the eggs and adding them together. The egg with 0 dots tried to trick us at first, but we used our fingers to help us realise that when we add or subtract 0, our number doesn’t change. Some children chose to continue filling their nests in their play. We also practised our careful counting on the C-touch board, by playing some counting games.

On Monday, we made the most of the sunshine, and set off to explore the Paddock. We took our show and tell with us, and shared our news under the gazebo. It was lovely to listen to the birds as we listened to our friends. We then explored the adventure trail, where the children practised climbing, jumping and swinging. It is so pleasing to see how the children are growing in strength and confidence!

On Wednesday, we were treated to a special show during assembly. Mrs Curling and some of her Main School gymnastics pupils put on an excellent performance, demonstrating their skills and routines to the younger pupils. Pre-prep were amazed by their talent, and we heard lots of lovely compliments throughout the show.

We continued to practise our listening skills in phonics this week, using our musical instruments. We had to pass around a shaker, first very loudly, and then, as quietly as we could! Our letter sound this week was t. We put our brains together to come up with some different words beginning with t and we came up with T-rex, train and tiger. Well done, Transition! We then had a go at writing our at sound, and filled in our t i-spy, where we had to colour in all the pictures beginning with t.

Once again, I look forward to another busy week in Transition as we begin exploring winter!
