A spring in our step

Transition arrived at school on Monday to a big surprise - Supertato was stuck in a shopping basket and the other veggies had been stuck down with masking tape! Luckily our super-children were there to save the day, and helped to free the veg!

We all thoroughly enjoyed meeting Sue Hendra last week, and hearing why she named her character Supertato rather than Super-cornflake or Super-toilet roll! It was great fun making our own super veggies and inspired lots of story-telling from the children.

Later on that morning, we watched Form 5’s drama production about the Romans. We loved looking at all their fantastic costumes and seeing how confident they were on stage. It was such a treat to be their special audience.

On Tuesday, we were excited to go on an Easter egg hunt. Eggs, bunnies and chicks were hidden all around the pirate ship and the children had to hunt high and low, to find them all. By the time they’d finished, not a single egg, bunny or chick remained, and the children’s buckets were full to the brim! They definitely earned the chocolate egg that was given to them as a reward.

During play, the children have enjoyed hunting for wiggly worms hidden in the soil and making worm cakes with them! They have also had fun using pipettes to transfer coloured water onto coffee filters to make some beautiful spring flowers, and practised their cutting skills by making ‘spring crowns’ to turn them into kings and queens.

Our sound of the week was qu. We had to think quite hard to find words that started with that sound, but Transition love a challenge and came up with some really interesting ideas, including quiet, queen and quavers. Drawing them was a challenge too, but everybody tried their hardest and thought carefully about the detail.

On Wednesday, the day of our trip finally arrived! We were thrilled at the thought of going on a coach and excited about what animals we might see. There were foxes, otters, deer, mice, polecats, Scottish wildcats, owls and terrapins, to name a few. We found out some fascinating facts about the animals and even got to meet a tawny owl and a hedgehog. Transition were so good at listening to the keeper, Jess, and very considerate when we needed to be quiet around the animals. On the way home, most of the children decided to copy the badgers, and have a little sleep!

After such a busy week, we were happy to go on a relaxing walk on Thursday to look for signs of spring. We loved how the warm sun felt on our face and noticed so many changes around us. We had to use our eagle owl eyes to find tiny insects, new shoots and leaf buds, and spent some time sitting quietly, listening for birds. Transition worked in pairs to record what they had found on their clipboards, and we saw some great teamwork from the children. Inspired by our trip on Wednesday, we then played a game called Wake up sleepy fox. We had to use our counting and number skills to play and thought it was great fun! What a lovely week we’ve had together!
