A week of science

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Science Week.

We started our week collecting our shopping from the pop-up shop in the Old Hall. The children were able to identify a variety of groceries and they carefully packed each one into the reusable bags. Once back in class, everyone worked as a team to unpack everything, ready for our morning snack. Great work, Team Robins!

As part of this week’s topic, the children enjoyed adding powder paint to water. Cornflour was then added to thicken the liquid. Paint brushes were used to make patterns and there was lots of swirling and mark-making.

I think the Skittle Experiment was the children’s favourite activity. The Robins sat patiently as they waited for the colours to drain away from the Skittles to create a beautiful pattern. Never missing a learning opportunity, I spoke about hot water and the dangers and I must say, the children did some great listening with their good listening ears.

Following the children’s interest in numbers, lots of fun was had, finding the hidden numbers in the large sand pit. Miss Ruby and I were very impressed with the children’s number recognition. They were also able to make links to the hidden numbers and their current age.

In Robins, there is a huge emphasis on communication and language. Our many activities support children’s early language and communication development. We regularly sing nursery rhymes but make it even more fun by slowing the speed and then changing to a faster pace. This is something the children thoroughly enjoy and it keeps them engaged.

The children have enjoyed playing the role of doctors and nurses during child-initiated play. Apparently, Miss Ruby had an ouchy knee and I had a worm in my ear! We were not worried, though, as there were many doctors to help us!

As a special treat, the children enjoyed tasting yummy fruity bread during snack time. Most of the Robins asked for more so I will definitely visit the shop to buy more.

In music, the children enjoyed using BoomWackers and they made quiet sounds and loud sounds. They also explored a variety of musical instruments and used a drum to walk around the circle.

On Wednesday, the children went shopping for Mother’s Day. The Robins used their Russell House bucks to buy something for their mummies. After shopping, the children gathered in the Main Entrance for a fabulous photo. Don’t forget, Robins… shhhhhhh, keep it a surprise until Mother’s Day

This week’s cooking activities consisted of bread rolls, rainbow sprinkle cakes and a yummy fruit salad. The children enjoyed kneading the dough, mixing the cupcakes and chopping fruit. We were super impressed with their chopping skills and later in the day, connections were also made between the colours of the fruit and Skittles.

Thursday afternoon was spent exploring the school grounds and enjoying a warming hot chocolate. We spent time looking at various flowers and birds whilst listening to all the various sounds around us. Mindfulness is a wonderful activity to focus on breathing out and breathing in. This supports children to feel calm by having space to be still and quiet.

Our bird feeder has been very busy with a variety of birds. We have seen magpies, wood pigeons, dunnocks, robins and also blue tits. It is lovely to see the birds eating the seed from the variety of bird feeders. It Next week our topics are Beep Beep Day, People Who Help Us, and Nutrition and Hydration. To support our topic, I have arranged a dental visit for the last week of term. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell.
