All about seeds

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Seed Gathering. Our Robins certainly embraced their love of plants and flowers and they enjoyed learning about different types of seeds.

Each child decorated an envelope and then independently chose which seeds they would like to take home to grow in their garden. There were lots of new words this week, such as: lime tree, sycamore, poppy and cornflower seeds. The envelopes looked very pretty with their brightly coloured spots and we spoke about the poem on the front.

As part of our topic, we looked at the pictures on our special flower bag. One of the Robins was able to identify a poppy flower. As an extension, I compared our seed pod to the picture of a poppy.

Our class Busy Boxes are always very popular and the children love taking them home. In fact, they independently like putting them in their bags. Each one contains a different activity to support fine motor control and it is lovely to see the children share photos of the activities in their Home/ School Journal.

The children have enjoyed taking turns changing the pictures on our class visual timetable. As well as promoting communication and language, it helps children to understand our daily routine. At the age of 2, they are able to understand what is happening now and what will happen next. Plus, it is great for their memory and recall.

Lots of fun was had on Tuesday, exploring the low-level PE circuit in the Russell Hall. The children listened very well to my instructions and they were able to navigate around the room using the arrows. Well done, Robins!

Mr McCarthy popped in after our PE session to read one of our favourite books… Dear Zoo. This was followed by the classic dinosaur story That’s Not My Dinosaur. He was very impressed with how well the children sat and listened. He asked many questions and the Robins eagerly answered as to which animal was hiding behind the flap.

The CTouch has been a popular resource during free-play. It was great to see the children taking turns and they drew some fabulous pictures. Later in the week, we listened to the Tiny Seed story. Following on with our topic, we read the story Each Peach Pear Plum. Everyone enjoyed the story and it made us feel very hungry at the end, when everyone came together to enjoy some plum pie.

This week, our cooking activities consisted of rosemary bread, apple crumble and smoothies. The children worked together to snip the rosemary for our bread. There was a lovely aroma in class and I think our cheeky friendly squirrel could smell it up in the tree, as he made his way to the bird feeder to have a look! On Thursday, we were kindly gifted some wonderful Somerset apples from one of our families. The Robins carefully sliced and chopped the apples into small pieces, ready to be cooked. Afterwards, they sprinkled a crumbly topping then we popped it in the oven. We also had a cheeky taste Thursday afternoon at snack time. The Robins said the crumble was delicious!

We found a beautiful caterpillar and we discovered it was a Buff Tip Moth (Phalera Bucephala). A short while later we found an Oak Bush Cricket (Meconeema Thalassinum) playing on our small-world table. After we had a look at them, we moved them to a safe area by the tree.

This week I introduced our Coffee Morning topic. The children are enjoying learning about the many different types of birds. I won’t reveal too much, as it will be a nice surprise for you all when the time comes.

Next week’s topic is Staying Fit. We have lots of fun activities planned for the children to enjoy and share with you at home. Perhaps your child might like to bring in something linked to our topic to share during Show and Tell.
