Baking superstars
10 Oct 2025This week’s topics in Robins were Harvest, Space and Trees.
The week started with a visit to the pop-up shop to collect our groceries. The children identified the different types of fruit and vegetables and they did some good counting. Once back in class, they helped myself and Miss Ruby to unpack everything. There was lots of good listening and they followed my instructions of taking the baby wipes to the changing mat. As a result, a couple of the Robins received stickers as they were keen to help. We love to see such enthusiastic helpers that are keen to help others!
The Robins learn many fundamental life skills during their time with us. Another key skill is tidying away and wiping the table. Of course, it’s great to see the children helping but even wiping tables is supporting their gross motor development.
As part of this week’s cooking activities, the children made planet biscuits, banana cake, pumpkin cake, space jam tarts and star sandwiches. We took our special pumpkin Bundt cake to show Mrs Tickner, Mrs Parker and Mr McCarthy. In fact, Mrs Du Toit also had a peep at the cake and took some lovely photos of our culinary creation. A short while later, the children delivered some yummy cake to everyone. There’s been lots of mixing, stirring, sprinkling and mashing. Great work, Robins.
We read the latest Supertato edition and the Robins shared that they thought the Evil Pea was not doing the right thing. The front cover looked like a flying saucer. With this in mind, we set about making a planet. First, we blew up the balloon and ooooooooops… I let go of it!! The children thought this was so funny so Miss Ruby and I repeated this several times, letting the balloons whizz around the room. It was great to hear the children’s laughter and we thought it was pretty funny, too.
We carefully mixed glue and water together before brushing it onto the balloon. The children then took turns to add strips of paper. Once dry, the Robins painted the balloon. However, this was not just an ordinary balloon, it was the planet ZOG!
Parental support has been fantastic this week and I cannot thank you all enough for supporting our topics. In fact, one of the Robins brought in a solar system from home and she wanted to share it with her friends. The children took turns to add the planets to the felt board. It’s working in partnerships which makes our class that extra special. The children also brought in pumpkins (Harvest), Stickman (Trees) and Solar System cards.
We were super proud of how well the children sat on Wednesday during our Whole School Harvest Festival. They did extremely well and the enjoyment was clear to see on their faces as they joined in with the actions. I think our favourite was Dingle Dangle Scarecrow.
This week has included picnics, trips to the field and chasing bubbles. We enjoyed a yummy picnic whilst watching the older children play football against another school. There was lots of laughter as the ball went over the fence into the sheep field. Even the sheep had fun as they moved the ball around the field.
A spaceship landed on the Russell House field and lots of aliens escaped. There were lots of different coloured aliens and some had six arms and three eyes. The Robins enjoyed finding them and we compared them all. There was lots of mathematical language and the Robins noticed that there were two of the same aliens. This activity thoroughly engaged the children and as a result, they now have a huge interest in space. We spoke about stars and planets and even satellites. Perhaps you could further explore space at home.
Lastly, we look forward to next week’s Coffee Morning. We can’t wait to see you all there and it will be a lovely way to end the first half of this term.
Next week’s topics are Halloween, Diwali and Leafman .Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!). Have a lovely weekend.
