Chinese New Year

We have spent our first week back after the half-term break celebrating Chinese New Year!

Our story this week has been The Great Race and the children have all loved learning about the animals and the different ways to celebrate.

Our Special Book worksheet this week has been to cut and stick all of the animals from The Great Race in the order that they came. This supported their scissor skills, story recall and number practice. The children did a fantastic job of remembering key parts of the story and enjoyed comparing the English written numerals to the Chinese ones.

We started the week by creating our own lanterns. The whole class made one, demonstrating good listening and attention skills to the instructions of how to create them.

The children also all engaged well with a slideshow all about the celebration. This taught us lots of facts, like how red is a lucky colour, about wearing brand new clothes, and we loved learning about all the different types of food people eat at Chinese New Year. We even made our own noodles! All of the children helped to slice the vegetables for the dish, then used chopsticks to eat it!

The whole class got stuck in with some sensory play. We had red gloop, coloured porridge oats, pom poms, glitter and golden coins. Everybody enjoyed mixing the textures and using them to roleplay making Chinese food.

We have also been very active this week! The class all loved doing stretching and balancing in our Great Race themed yoga class and were able to follow instructions perfectly! Once in the garden, we also completed our own obstacle course Great Race, again practising those large motor skills. Form 1 also did their assembly on Chinese New Year, so we learnt even more facts!

Our special leaf of the week was awarded to somebody who has been working really hard to manage big feelings and make friends. They have been displaying such kind and helpful behaviour, demonstrating how to share and supporting others with tasks like doing their coat zips, or helping to tidy something away. We are so proud!

Overall, the children have worked really hard to learn new things about a new culture and have shown curiosity and inquisitiveness throughout the week. We are so excited that next week is Book Week! We can't wait to read everybody's favourite stories, meet an author and go on a story adventure around Pre-Prep. Have a great weekend!
