Crash, bang, wallop!

The appearance of the Gamelan in the music room generated great excitement this week, with the children being given the opportunity to experience the Javanese musical instruments.

The Gamelan is heavily percussion and involves a lot of striking of brass instruments. The class favourite certainly appeared to be the large gong!

In French, Form 7 have been revisiting their numbers from 1 to 100. They also enjoyed playing a game of Combien ça coûte ?, a useful phrase they will be using frequently during their upcoming French trip. It’s been a fun and practical way to build confidence with their recognition of numbers.

The South America project is in full swing and this week they have been drawing maps and finding out about some of the products of the Amazon rainforest. Combining their research and ICT skills, they discovered some interesting facts about natural rubber, coffee and chocolate. Perhaps the most popular fact was that the most expensive coffee is made from beans excreted by the cat-like creature, the luwak (or civet). Delicious!

The children have been continuing to learn about parts of circles in maths and have begun to use this knowledge alongside formulae to make calculations to find the circumference and the area of circles. They have also continued to develop their use of practical equipment by combining compass and ruler work to produce several designs in a circle.

A mathematical congratulations must be given to the eight Form 7’s who competed in the area heat of the Quiz Club’s National Maths Championships on Thursday. Whilst we must wait to find out the fate of one of our teams, the other cruised through automatically and will line up in the semi-finals next month.

Whilst on the theme of congratulations, I would also like to acknowledge the excellent efforts of our netballers and gymnasts this week. Our U11 A team came 3rd in the Sevenoaks School netball tournament, accumulating some fine results along the way, whilst both our Boys and Mixed Teams were crowned as Regional Champions in the BSGA Regional Floor & Vault Championships at Aberdour School on Sunday - an incredible achievement!
