Elmer and friends

This week in nursery, we have been exploring Anti-Bullying Week by reading the story, Elmer. We have been looking at similarities and differences between ourselves and others as well as discussing what makes us special.

To explore these ideas, the children all created their own self-portrait. They used mirrors and a range of creative resources to look at their skin, eye and hair colour, curly and straight hair amongst other things that make us all look different.

Elmer has also helped us to explore colours. On Monday, the children enjoyed matching colours with paints and cotton buds on their Elmer colouring sheets, practising both sorting and fine motor skills. On Wednesday, they used the tops of milk bottles to create their own Elmer Elephants in a sticking and craft activity. And on Thursday, we went on a colour walk around the school, trying to find every colour of the rainbow and colouring in each section once we had found something, from the blue sky to the red ladybirds, the children all did great spotting!

We have also explored some other events this week. It has been Nursery Rhyme Week, World Science Day on Monday, and Remembrance Day on Tuesday. To explore these events, we have been learning signs to go with our nursery rhymes - this really helps communication and language skills. The children loved our dinosaur and volcano experiment where we mixed bicarbonate of soda with coloured vinegar, supporting our knowledge and understanding of the world. Lastly, we learnt all about Remembrance Day, both in the classroom and in our assembly, using this knowledge to create our own wreaths.

Last, but not least, we went on our outing to the library on Tuesday. The children loved the minibus ride down the road, spotting all the poppies and memorials on the way. Our librarian friends had prepared an Elmer scavenger hunt for us where we had to find all the characters around the library, as well as lots of colouring sheets. They also read to us lots of stories about being kind, making friends and helping others, before the nursery children chose their own storybooks to borrow and bring back to school.

Well done to all the children for their hard work this week, especially when practising for our nativity! Next week we will be focusing on The Three Little Pigs as our story, and also learning about how to stay safe on the roads as part of Road Safety Week. Have a great weekend!
