Healthy eating

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Healthy Eating.

We started the week with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our shopping from the pop-up shop. The children listened to my instructions and then, before carefully packing the shopping, they were able to identify a variety of fruit and vegetables. Once back in class, the Robins helped to unpack the groceries on the counter.

Our PE sensory circuits were enjoyed by all the children and after we explored the equipment, we gathered to participate in a fun yoga dance session. It was called Yoga Freeze. Everyone danced and bopped around until we stopped and held a variety of yoga poses. This was lots of fun and it was great watching the children explore music and movement with their bodies.

As part of this week’s topic, we explored healthy eating by participating in playing the Kim’s Game. The Robins were able to remember the missing objects and it was great for promoting communication and language. Perhaps you could also play this game at home with your child.

Our story of the week was Supertato and we enjoyed reading about the Evil Pea. There were lots of vegetables and fruit in the story so with this in mind, we made a yummy hummus and vegetable snack.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of orange and dark chocolate sponge muffins, cheese sandwiches, wholemeal rolls, apple and cinnamon cake (apples picked from The Paddock) and hummus and veggie sticks. All our cakes contain a low amount of sugar as we ensure fruit is used as this provides natural sugars.

Lots of fun was had on The Paddock, gathering apples from the tree. The Robins thought it was very funny watching me shake the apples and use the broom to reach the highest ones. The Robins stood back until there were enough apples and then, after saying ready, steady, go…they all sprung into action and collected the apples.

Following on with our topic, the children enjoyed using scissors and glue to make some pictures of Supertato. The Robins enjoyed this activity and it was a great way to follow on from our story.

It was lovely meeting the new children in our Pre-Prep assembly and one of our Robins received a special leaf as she is now sleeping in her big, grown-up bed at home. The Home/School Journals are a wonderful way to promote communication and language by sharing news from home. Therefore, it was also nice to reward this achievement during our assembly time.

The Robins class was full of fun on Thursday and the music made us bop, shake and wiggle whilst making marks during our scrimbling activity. We encouraged the children to kneel and lean over to support their core muscles and we were all very pleased with the end result… which you can see in our lovely photo in the garden.

Life skills are a fundamental part in the children’s journey whilst they are in Robins. We encourage the children to be part of a team by laying the table and tidying away and cleaning the surfaces.

Lastly, we ventured around the school grounds in our waterproof suits. It was lovely listening to the sounds of nature whilst also waiting for the trains whooooooosh past!

Next week, our topic will be Recycling. We have lots of fun activities planned to support the children’s learning. We encourage children to bring in something from home (just not too big please). This can be related to our weekly topic or anything else they would like to share or celebrate with us. The children enjoy sharing their objects from home during carpet time and it is a fantastic way to build effective communication and listening skills.

Have a lovely weekend!
