How much does a ladybird weigh?

How much does a ladybird weigh? An unusual question at first glance, but one that the children have been answering in mathematics this week.

The class has been researching the weights of animals in order to establish some memorable objects that weigh particular amounts. By knowing that a common house rabbit weighs roughly 2kg and an adult panda just over 100kg, the children are able to develop milestones so that they are able to check if their answers are sensible when working on real life problems involving mass.

The Leavers’ Programme kicked off this week with a visit from Peak Skills to provide a session on First Aid. This session included information on how to conduct the Primary Survey when approaching somebody in need of help, what to do if a casualty is unresponsive, how to use an AED and how to deal with common problems such as choking and cuts. Next week, we look forward to the visits of Kent Police on Tuesday and Compass for Life on Thursday.

Week 3's Public Speaking Competition final is on the horizon and the children of Form 7 are busy preparing their speeches, ready for the first round next week. Preparation has included practising speaking enthusiastically and clearly about a mundane object, such as a whisk or a toothbrush; acting as interviewer with a partner, asking follow-up questions and working on posture, volume and expression. We are greatly looking forward to the event itself!

It was also fantastic to see the return of the cricket whites for the Summer Term. The children looked the part as they participated in a number of activities on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon as many of them prepare for their first matches of the season on Wednesday next week.
