How we eat healthy
03 Oct 2025This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Healthy Eating.
Wow! We enjoyed a busy week filled with lots of fun activities based upon our topic and the children’s interests. There was also a spooky theme as the children showed an interest in Halloween.
On Monday, we collected our shopping from the Old Hall and this kick-started our Healthy Eating topic. A discussion was had around the variety of fruit and vegetables and we also used lots of mathematical language. There was a focus on bigger than and smaller than and the Robins did a great job of identifying the biggest and the smallest.
Once back in class, we made a yummy blueberry and pineapple cake. The children spoke about different types of fruit and they used some great describing words, such as spikey, shiny and sweet. The cake was delicious and it was certainly enjoyed by all. Miss Ruby and I do hope that all the mummies and daddies had a little taste, too.
Following on with cooking, we made seeded rolls, Greek yogurt granola pots (made with homemade granola) and pizza. Our homemade granola tasted super yummy and as a treat, the Robins also enjoyed some for their snack. There were lots of clean, empty bowls. Well done, Robins!
In order to eat healthy, it is important to eat a variety of foods. Eating healthy during the early years can set a child up for good health later in life. We looked at the British Nutrition Foundation website which gave us lots of interesting information.
Continuing with our topic, we discussed a variety of fruits during our Talk for Learning. The children were able to identify the variety of fruit on the picture and then spoke about their favourite. Some of the children also made connections when playing the shopping game and were able to remember some of the fruits from the picture.
Lots of fun was had exploring the school grounds. We visited the sheep, chased bubbles and rolled around on the grass. The children enjoyed using the shoe cleaner to ensure their shoes were not muddy.
We have been very busy practising for our Coffee Morning and we are hoping you can all attend as there will be lots of wiggling and bobbing to music. There is always lots of laughter and giggles in class as it is important for the Robins to have fun and enjoy lots of different experiences.
Miss Ruby and I thoroughly enjoy listening and looking at the children’s weekly news in their Home/School Journals. It was lovely to see one of our children display their daily stickers in their books. There were also some lovely photos which translated the child’s family members in his home language, Tamil.
We have now moved into October, so we changed the class calendar and the children were thrilled to see a robin (the feathery kind) in the new picture. Whilst on the subject of birds, Percy the Pigeon has been pecking away at the seed on our class feeder.
Lastly, thank you for this week’s parental support towards our topic. The children enjoyed showing their items of interest during Show and Tell and this extended the children’s learning, whilst also promoting communication and language.
Next week’s topic is Harvest, Space Week and Trees. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!).
