Keep our beaches clean

This week’s topic in Russell Robins was Keep Our Beaches Clean.

The week started with a visit to the pop-up shop to collect our weekly groceries. We used this opportunity to link the packaging to our topic by sharing where we should dispose of our rubbish. I shared that it is important to dispose of any rubbish in the bin when going to the beach or another option would be to take it home.

The children enjoyed removing waste from the beach scene and they disposed of the rubbish in the bin. I shared some facts on how rubbish could affect the wildlife in our oceans. Afterwards, we watched A Whale’s Tale which highlighted the devastating effects of rubbish in the ocean. The marine wildlife could become trapped in bags, disused nets and bottles.

Continuing with this week’s topic, the children enjoyed wrapping boxes with a variety of under the sea colour tissue paper. Wrapping is great fun and it is a great skill for the children to explore. It is a functional life skill and it also supports bilateral coordination.

In true Robins style, we enjoyed picnics, walks around the school grounds and even a spot of bird spotting. 🦅During one of our many adventures, we spent time on the Pirate Ship during lunch play with the older children. The Form 1 children enjoyed playing the role of dinosaurs with our little ones. A couple of children from Main School popped over to say hi and they helped the Robins walk back through the Paddock whilst holding their hands. The Robins are always so thrilled to see the older children and this fosters a great sense of family which is special about our school.

Form 6 popped in each day and spent time playing with the children and of course, joined us for a yummy snack. The Robins love giving the older children a big high five before they make their way back to their lessons.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of banana cake, under the sea cakes, bread rolls, French cake and fruit salad. Each day, the children enjoy making a culinary creation and we also taste a little bit before going home. It is important for the children to taste their cooking during the experience so they can eat what they have made as a group. Of course, cooking links to many areas of the curriculum and it supports children’s listening skills and communication and language. However, we had a slight egg dilemma as we were two eggs short for our recipe. Therefore, we visited Mrs Bonnie, who kindly gave us some eggs for our French cake. Afterwards, we visited the Paddock to collect some apples and one of the Robins held the bowl to collect all the fallen apples (which Miss Ruby and I removed from the tree). Once back in class, the Robins took turns to chop the apples and then we added cinnamon and brown sugar, before stewing them on the hob in the kitchen.

In PE, the children moved around the sensory circuit in a variety of ways and they negotiated space between each other and the equipment. Sometimes, they fall over, but it is an important skill as it allows them to become more aware of their surroundings. We finished the session with a game of sleeping bunnies and snapping dinosaurs. Miss Ruby and I love nothing more than to get down to the children’s level and become big Robins.

The children have recently shown an increased interest in tractors. As a special treat, we visited Mr John and Mr Phil’s ride-on lawnmower. They looked at the wheels and the different parts and they spoke about the different colours.

Lastly, thank you for this week’s parental support towards our topic. The children enjoyed showing their items of interest during Show and Tell. Next week’s topic is Healthy Eating. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!). Have a lovely weekend.
