Life-sized learning

It was lovely to welcome the children back after the half-term break and they were all very excited and ready to get back into the swing of school life. We started the morning on Monday by catching up with any news the children wished to share. Some children had been on holidays and others had enjoyed spending time at home. The children shared what they had been doing and they all listened well to each other.

In literacy, the children will be focusing on developing their independent writing, so we all sat together at the tables to write about our half-term news. They did very well, sounding out the words independently and remembering (mostly) to use finger spaces between words. This will develop their confidence and support their transition into Form 2. Later in the week, the children also wrote about each of their five senses, using the tricky word my. Again, working as a whole class, the children were challenged to be as independent as possible and write simple sentences such as My tongue is for tasting.

The children have loved continuing our topic on the human body and this week, focusing now on the organs. The children learnt about the brain, stomach, liver, kidneys, lungs, heart, and large and small intestines. During our focus activity, the children carefully cut out these organs and then placed them in the correct position on their human body outline. Some children even chose to add some food to the stomach! The children stuck their finished work into their literacy book and had a go at labelling some of the organs.

In maths this week we have continued to learn about telling the time. The children were fantastic and remembered the vocabulary linked to this. All were very independent during our focused activity, which we again did as a whole class. The children were able to write the times shown on the different clocks, all confident to identify o'clock. As an additional challenge, the children then drew clock hands on blank clock faces to show different times.

Form 1 enjoyed competing in a challenge to build their own life-sized skeletons! The children were grouped into three teams and were challenged to cut out the bones and use split pins to secure the skeleton pieces together. They worked collaboratively and it was great to see them discussing which pieces should go where. By looking at our model of a skeleton, the children were able to decide on most of the pieces themselves. Each team was successful and we now have three life-sized paper skeletons proudly displayed in Form 1.

The children have also had the opportunity to continue to explore the topic of the human body through lots of playful activities. Some of these included looking at x-rays of hands and then painting the bones on black paper with white paint, drawing around each other on large sheets of paper and adding the organs and bones and making skeleton pictures using art straws. They have also loved the roleplay area this week which has been a hospital and baby ward.

Nursery visited Form 1 this week to share their exciting news about the caterpillars! They had finally turned into beautiful butterflies and the Nursery children explained that they were now ready to fly away. Form 1 enjoyed seeing the butterflies and watching them as they slowly opened and closed their wings.
