Shipwrecked

In English, having read an excerpt from Michael Morpurgos' The Wreck of the Zanzibar, the children have been practising writing in a similar style.

This has required them to pretend that they are a young girl, writing a diary plotting the events of a shipwreck off the coast of Scilly in the early 20th century. Many discussions about the level of technology at that time and in such an isolated area followed and the adults in the room were made to feel very old: Didn't they even have basic mobile phones with no internet? Those Nokia ones are really old!

In music, Form 6 has been exploring how to compose a piece in ternary form. This is a structure of music that many pieces are written in, particularly those which feature in the early grades. Form 6 enjoyed working outside with their chime bars, composing the first section of their music. They were keen to share their ideas with the class at the end of the lesson. They listened to a piece of music in ternary form and discussed how the middle section was different to the other sections and then, as a class, we thought about which musical elements we could change to ensure the middle section sounds different from the first section such as dynamics, tempos, tonality, texture. Next week they will be looking to refine their first section of music and begin composing a contrasting section.

Form 6 is getting ready for an exciting journey.  We're delighted to announce that our pupils are starting a special penpal correspondence with a primary school in Hardelot, France. This is a fantastic opportunity to make new friends, discover another culture, and boost writing skills along the way. The partnerships will be revealed this week and Form 6 will start writing their letter.
