Sparking some ideas

After impressive performances and medals received by our netballers and gymnasts on Friday and Sunday respectively, the children started off their week with a visit to the Science Museum in London.

The class enjoyed learning about Tesla in the WonderLab and how he generated wireless electricity back in the 1890s, although we all agreed having something that generated lightning in your basement was perhaps not the safest way to enjoy WiFi. Form 7 investigated the breadth of job descriptions that encompass engineer and tried our hand at various engineering jobs, from pharmaceuticals to recycling. In the Future of Food exhibit the children were fairly horrified at watching how the tonnes of fertiliser and pesticide being used ticked up before our very eyes. The boys and girls were astonished to learn that 60% of a chicken nugget is actually corn and were divided on who would actually want to try cell-grown meat in the future. The last exhibit visited was the Energy Revolution. There, Form 7 collected lots of ideas to use for their Homes for the Future Project along with other ideas from the day.

For videos and more photos of their visit, see our Facebook Page.

Elsewhere in school, the Amazon project folders are beginning to take shape with an informative piece of writing about the journey of a banana, from the plantations of South America to the supermarket in Europe, being added. Soon the children will begin their creative writing piece on this topic, which is always a favourite, where they will consider the feelings of the poor banana as it is taken away from its family on this journey.

Next week in school is both Safer Internet Week and Children’s Health Week, along with House Music on Friday. Look out for updates and photos on the school’s social media channels and in our bulletin.
