Sport report: Rugby
18 Mar 2026Reports on recent games and tournaments, as written by Russell House players.
U8/9 v Solefield: We played Solefield at home and drew 6-6. The team played really well. My player of the match was Leo, because he ran well, scored a good try and supported the team. Today, the team's handling was good and we scored some good tries. Harry side-stepped someone and ran through to score a very good try. The team should be proud of themselves for getting a draw result. Oliver
U9 v Solefield: We won 15 tries to 14 tries. It was a very last minute win as we made seven tackles in a row to hold them off from scoring. They played really well and very nearly won. Rowan
U8/9 Triangular v Solefield & Sevenoaks Prep: On the 26th of February, Russell House U8/9A team played two rugby matches. One was against Solefield and the other against Sevenoaks Prep. At half-time during our first match, we were 3-2 up with Leo scoring 2 and Oliver scoring 1. At full-time, Russell House won 6-2. Orson, Oliver and Kit scored one try each. By half-time in our second, we were 2-3 down, with Orson and Oliver having scored. At the final whistle, we lost 4-5 with Leo and Orson scoring. It was fun though. Orson
U10/11A v Sevenoaks Prep: Russell House played a rugby match against Sevenoaks Prep. The result was 4-2 to Sevenoaks Prep, but both teams played exceptionally well. The try scorers for Russell House were Kit and Harry. Harry
U10/11A v Hilden Oaks: In the first half, we played very well by passing the ball nicely. Our handling was great, but our support play was even better. We finished the first half 5-2 to us. In the second half, Hilden Oaks came back really strong. We didn't let it slip though, winning the game 10-9. We all played very well for Form 7's last rugby match. My player of the match is Zachary. Kit
U10/11B v Hilden Oaks: It was a very tight game to start with, but towards the end Russell House pulled away. To start the game, I scored the opening try, closely followed by Hilden Oaks. We then started to score a few more. Seán made 4 tries, William made 8 tries, Rowan made 2 tries, Theo made 1 try, Rory made 1 try and Finlay made one try. I think one of the better things we could do as a team is not only pass when we get touched but to pass just before because that way the defender isn't marking you. Rowan got a well deserved player of the match. Theo
U8/9A v Hilden Oaks: In our final rugby match of the season, we played Hilden Oaks in a touch game. We have improved a lot this term in contact and touch rugby. In this last game, we won 13-10. I thought everyone played their part and our teamwork was brilliant. Jasper and Gabriel both played very well. I was very proud to be voted player of the match. I have really enjoyed playing rugby this term and now we are looking forward to Inter-House Rugby, then cricket in the summer. Remy
U8/9B v Hilden Oaks: Everyone did their very best today. We won 10-2 which was amazing. There is just one thing to work on though: our defensive line. We are all squiggly, so they got through easily at times. Harry was our player of the match. John
U9 v Sevenoaks Prep & Solefield: We knew we were going to be facing two strong teams. Our first game was against Sevenoaks Prep. We played fantastically well and the final score was 8-2 to Russell House. Our next game we won 7-3 against Solefield. As a team, I felt we played brilliantly and my player of the match was Gabriel because he made some amazing tackles. Jasper
U8/9 v Sevenoaks Prep & Solefield: We played two matches, one against Solefield and the other against Sevenoaks Prep. At half-time of our first match, we were 3-2 up with Leo scoring 2 and Oliver with 1. At full-time, Russell House won 6-2, with Orson scoring one, Oliver scoring one and Kit with one. In our second match at half-time, we were 2-3 down, with Orson and Oliver scoring. Orson
U8 v Sevenoaks Prep: The match was fun. The defensive line, we need to work on. I liked how we made some good tackles, but we didn't get into much space so the opponents got through easily. We only made those tackles because we ran very fast. The tries we scored were very impressive, but they only made those tries because those people were in space. So I really think we played well and ran exceptionally fast. Well done to everyone. It was a great game. William
U10/11 A v Sevenoaks Prep: It was a tough match against Sevenoaks Prep this week with the opposition taking an early lead. We fought back, but they scored a late try to take the score away from us. It ended 4-2. Kit played very well and Zachary scored a well-deserved try. We were guilty of tackling a little too high and gave away too many penalties, but we will learn!
U10/11B v Sevenoaks Prep: The team put in a strong performance overall, showing good sportsmanship on the field, even though we didn’t come away with the win. Rowan worked hard throughout the match and was rewarded with three tries. Theo E matched him with three of his own, showing great awareness and finishing ability. Despite the final score, the effort, teamwork, and attitude from everyone was outstanding. Finlay
U10/11A v Caterham A&B: The first game was a 1-1 draw with the try scorer being Jake and I'd say it was one of our best matches of rugby we've played in a while, with our tackling, support play and handling being excellent. Our second game was also a draw, with the final score being 5-5. The try scorers were 2 for Theo E, 2 for Kit and 1 for Noah. Euan
U10/11B v Caterham & Copthorne: We played Caterham first and won 4-1. The game was fairly stop-start because the Caterham coach kept telling his players to step over the ball and get onside. We played very well and the scorers of the tries were William, Finlay and Anthony. Our defensive line was very good and we went up and down the field together and side to side together. Our handling for both games was amazing and we only conceded one knock-on in both matches. The second match, we won 5-1 and the scorers were Anthony, William and Rowan. We played similarly to the first game, but the support play was a lot better. It was a brilliant day of rugby for the B team!
U10/11A v Spring Grove: It was the first match back to rugby and it went great, even though we were playing the T1 format which is not that familiar to us. We played Spring Grove and drew 10-10. We went down to an early try but came back quickly with a try from Noah. When we got to half-time, we knew we could still make a difference in the game. They did get a try first ,but we then scored the most amazing try from Jake. When the match ended, we were unlucky not to win, but it was a great game back and best of all was the brilliant solo effort from Jake. Kit
U10/11B v Spring Grove: On the 14th of January, we played Spring Grove. Unfortunately, we drew 10-10. Even though we had possession of the ball lots more than the opposition and we were mainly in their half, we didn't manage to score as many tries as we should have. Rowen was good at staying on the wing in support and Will was good with his handling. Theo E was good at dodging tags by side stepping, earning us a try. Ryan was good at keeping the ball going down the line into space. Seán was good at holding the defensive line and being scrum-half in the scrums and he scored a try too. Freddie was good at keeping the ball going to the wing and Finlay was good at keeping a good back line. I think we need to run straight more and run sideways less. Player of the match goes to Theo H for running straight, not sideways, and for getting the three people in after a tag. George
U10/11A v The Mead: Today's match was a really spectacular one, showing how well we could perform in a rugby match. We started off playing just as well as the opposition, but not much longer than a few minutes in, Noah scored a brilliant first try, followed by a second one. Then The Mead decided to try and make things even and scored their first try, making the score 2-1 to us. The rest of the match went the same until The Mead started to slow down, but we did not. The score from then on followed the same pattern, us scoring 1 try about every 7 minutes. The end result was a win for us, the score 8-3, with the last 6 goals scored by Noah, Kit, Euan and me. We really enjoyed playing our match today and I hope we can do just as well in other matches. Theo E
U10/11B v The Mead: We played against The Mead and we won 9-7. William got 5 tries, Anthony got 3 tries and Theo got one too. Ryan and Finlay tried really hard. Even though William was voted player of the match, I think it should have been Ryan or Finlay. It was a great game. William
U9 v Bickley Park: It was a great match and the score was 20-10. My player of the match would have to be Milo because of his great running and try scoring against Bickley Park School. He scored a hat-trick of tries! It wasn't the best of conditions, but we still played well and we won. Arthur
U8/9A v Bickley Park: We played our first ever rugby match against Bickley Park. At half-time, we were losing 20-15 and I was worried we were going to lose the match. In the second half, we got it together, we tackled well and began to pass better. We scored 5 tries in the second half and won the match 40-20, which we were all super happy about. Cameron
U9 v King's Rochester: This was our first contact match in Form 5 and, in fact, ever! We knew it was going to be tough, but we had a positive attitude. Unfortunately, it did not go our way, but after a tricky first half, we started the second half with a better performance. Beau was our first try scorer, then Milo followed shortly after. Gabriel was awarded player of the match for his brilliant tackles and team play. The score was 9-2 to Kings, who played very well. We are looking forward to our next match, as we learned a lot from this game which we can take with us to the next. Jasper
U8/9 v King's Rochester: It was a really tight game but we snatched the win. Oliver was player of the match. Oliver scored 2 tries, Thomas scored 2 tries and Cameron scored 1 try. Camreon did a lot of running. Henry
