Staying afloat

In science, Form 5 took on a floating challenge using just five grams of play-dough.

Working in teams, they had to decide which shape would give their design the best chance of floating. Once built, they made predictions about which type of water their play-dough boat would float best in. The options were fizzy water, fresh water and salty water. There was great excitement in the classroom, especially when one group managed to keep their play-dough boat afloat in all three water types. Their winning design has now been patented, so unfortunately we cannot share their top-secret strategy.

This week in computing, Form 5 have been exploring a fun piece of music software called Isle of Tune. The children used it to create their own original tracks, experimenting with different rhythms, beats and melodies by designing musical roads filled with houses, trees and street lamps that trigger sounds. They have shown real creativity in their compositions and have also been developing their digital communication skills by reviewing each other’s work. Using Google tools, they shared feedback with their classmates, explaining what they liked and offering suggestions for improvement. It has been a fantastic way to combine music, creativity and computing.
