Stop and go

This week’s topic in Robins was Road Safety and… Elvis is now in the building, following a busy journey all the way from the North Pole!

Wow! What an exciting week we have all had, learning about staying safe near roads and many more interesting facts. In fact, you are never too old to learn something new as I also learnt something new this week. Do you know what a toucan crossing is? It is very similar to a pelican crossing, the difference is, it has a bike symbol next to the red/ green person. If you would like to learn more information on this, please click here

In true Robins-style, we started the week with a visit to the Old Hall to collect our groceries. The children’s confidence was clear to see as myself and Miss Ruby observed the children popping the groceries into the bags all by themselves. It is great for the children’s confidence and independence to visit the many different areas of the school. This is why at the age of 2, the Robins are confident and very capable children, experiencing many different life skills at a young age.

We have been super busy practising for our Christmas Concert and this year, I have challenged the children to walk on and off the stage with very little support. Children need an element of risk in their lives to test their capabilities and I can safely say, our Robins are very capable!

Road Safety is one of my most favourite topics as it provides the children with basic understanding of staying safe near roads. During Talk for Learning, we looked at our poster and spoke about the different colours on the pedestrian pelican light. Stop 🔴get ready 🟠go 🟢have all been this week’s main focus and these have all been the base of this week’s activities. For example, we played red light, green light and when I shouted a colour, the children had to either stop or go. Each year, we participate in Brake’s Road Safety Week and they provide us with some fabulous resources. If you’d like to continue this at home, then please click here.

We made a giant pedestrian light sign and the children helped to display it next to our road rug. The children enjoyed learning the song below to help them to remain safe:

Oh, before, we walk across the road,

Oh, before we walk across the road,

We need to stop 🛑, look 👀 and listen 👂

Before we cross the road.

The children have certainly been very creative and there has been lots of colouring and snipping. The children took their snipping home in special bags and they were very proud of their cutting skills.

We ventured around the school grounds whilst driving our bikes/ ride-ons. This is one of the children’s favourite activities and it’s always wonderful to see the delight and excitement on the faces as they line up at the gate before Miss Ruby and I say go 🟢.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of ready, steady, go…pizzas, banana cake, Stop! Cinnamon buns and get ready…flapjacks.

Elvis has been super popular with the Robins and they’ve all taken turns to share him. He is not your typical cheeky elf as he likes sensible behaviour and he likes to do the right thing, just like us! In fact, as a surprise this week, Elvis took our musical instruments up to the Hall so we could practise. He then also set-up a surprise colouring activity for the Robins which was great fun.

The Robins are such good helpers that they enjoyed helping to clean and wipe the tables after snack time. They also tucked in the chairs and helped to set-up activities. Well done, Robins.

There was lots of lovely news from the children’s Home/School Journals and it was great to see that one of our Robins had also made something at home, linked to road safety.

Lots of fun was had, exploring snow, the school ground, hot chocolate walks and visits to The Farm. The children also spent time riding their bikes around the playground and front court. They practised their driving skills and we used our special red for stop and green for go cards.

Mr Phil popped in to say hi and he spoke to us about staying safe in the school car park. The children shared some of this week’s interesting facts with him which showed how much information they had retained.

Next week’s topic is Hibernation and we have lots of activities planned. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or one of their favourite things (just not too big!). Have a lovely weekend.
