Summer sunshine
26 Jun 2026Form 1 have enjoyed our topic on summer this week and the weather has certainly been appropriate for this theme!
On Monday, we had fun thinking about going on holiday and all the different places the children would like to travel to. We read a story about a little boy who was choosing his holiday and the children were able to think of the type of holiday they would like - swimming pools were very popular!
For our literacy this week, the children made their own passports. The children looked at how to spell their full names and wrote a sentence about how old they are and their date of birth. The children then drew pictures of themselves on little squares of paper and stuck them into their passports. Lots of passports were then taken to the roleplay area, which is currently an airport.
We had a visit to the Form 2 classroom on Tuesday, which the children really enjoyed. They explored the classroom a little bit and Mrs Varley was on hand to explain how things work and what to expect. We had our maths lesson in the Form 2 classroom so that the children could experience what it felt like to sit at the tables. We will pop in again next Tuesday for another visit so that the children feel even more comfortable and ready for the changes ahead.
In maths, we have revisited subtraction within 10 and the children have really shown their confidence and ability to not only understand mathematical symbols but to also solve these problems using a variety of strategies. We found the answer to subtraction problems by using our fingers, crossing out pictures and also jumping back along a number line. We have continued to practice number formation and careful counting.
We had a look at seaside holidays from the past and the children were full of questions when looking at old black and white photographs of people on the beach. We discussed what we mean when we talk about the past and the present and used these words throughout our discussion. We focused on similarities and differences and this started a very interesting conversation about how other things might have been different in the past in comparison to today.
We were treated to a wonderful gymnastics display this week during our Pre-Prep assembly and the children were suitably impressed with the skills and speed of the gymnasts. Some children taking part in the display are just beginning to learn some skills, such as cartwheels, while the older children are more experienced. It was a great opportunity for the Pre-Prep children to see how hard work and dedication results in perfecting skills and becoming more proficient. There were lots of hands up when Mrs Curling asked who would like to join gymnastics!
We have been rehearsing for our Pre-Prep Celebration this week and working with Miss Norford to learn our songs. The children have worked extremely hard to learn all the words and to also memorise their class poem. They are so excited to share everything we have done with you next Wednesday and everyone is very much looking forward to it.
Of course, with the extremely hot weather, we have been trying to help the children to stay cool and comfortable. The children loved making fans to keep cool and playing in the water tray or in the shady areas outside. We learned about how to stay safe in the sun and the children were able to say that it is important to wear sun cream, wear a hat, play in the shade, drink plenty of water and wear clothes to protect our skin.
