Sweet strawberries

This week’s topics in Russell Robins were Stonepitts, Sports Day and Insect Week.

Wow!! What a super busy week we’ve had, making lots of memories together. We started the week with our class trip to Stonepitts. Jackie spoke to all the children and their families and explained that we must only pick red strawberries 🍓. The children listened to all the information before heading off with their punnets to collect some juicy strawberries.

Many strawberries were picked and some were also eaten! The children enjoyed watching the kite fly around in the sky as it deterred birds from pecking the strawberries. The sun was shining but there was a lovely breeze to keep us cool. After collecting strawberries, we gathered together as a group to enjoy a delicious picnic with our families. Cheeky Gus the farm dog joined us and said hello. Although, I think he was hoping for a sausage or two. Following our picnic, myself and Miss Ruby gathered the children together so I could read one of our favourite books Dear Zoo

As part of this week’s topics, we also explored insects and the children liked making them a house in the sensory tray, using the open-ended resources which were used in a variety of ways. There was a special delivery to Mrs Tickner and never missing an opportunity, I reused the box and the paper from inside. These materials worked well as our sensory insect tuff tray. Everyone enjoyed finding the insects and it was great watching the children hide them amongst the shredded paper.

There was lots of cheering and clapping on Tuesday as we celebrated Sports Day on the Paddock under the shade of the trees. The children did a great job and as a result, were rewarded with a special sticker from Mr McCarthy. A delicious picnic followed with sandwiches, Paw Patrol cakes, teddy crisps and an ice lolly. Finally, I read the story Brown Bear, Brown Bear before some of  the children made their way to lunch.

Experiences are often repeated in the children’s play. Therefore, our Sports Day resources were placed in a wicker box to see if the children would access them and create their own races or fun. Well, lots of fun was had exploring the spots, cones and bean bags. Oops…not forgetting Zoomer from Paw Patrol as he helped the children to run very fast during the circle relay.

This week’s cooking activities consisted of strawberry jam (which we collected from Stonepitts), strawberry jam sponge cake and one of the children’s favourites…banana cake. The Robins used knives to chop the strawberries and they used their super strong muscles to mix the cake ingredients together.

As part of French Day, we tried some warm croissants and to make it extra special, we added some of our homemade strawberry jam. The children arrived at school wearing French colours and they enjoyed learning some French words during carpet time.

The CTouch board was used to watch The Very Hungry Caterpillar 🐛 and the children identified the variety of fruits which he ate through. The Robins enjoyed using the stylus to mark-make, adding lots of colour and then we also watched a French video…bien fait.

Thank you for your continued support and it is great to see how much the children’s families support our weekly topics by sending in objects from home. One of the Robins brought in some Sports Day books and we read these during carpet time.

Our topic for next week is Fairy Tales. Your child is welcome to bring in something from home linked to our topic or their interests (bookbag size). They will have the opportunity to share these during Show and Tell

Next week will be the final bulletin of the Summer Term. Miss Ruby and I will be sad to see some of our Robins fly the nest to Nursery. However, there will be plenty more opportunities as they start their new journey as they move through the Pre-Prep. We wish you a happy and restful summer break and we look forward to welcoming you back in the Autumn Term, along with our new Robins. Keep your eyes peeled for a transformation in Robins Class as we undergo a makeover during the break.
