We are farmers
02 May 2025This week in Form 1 we have continued our Farm topic using our story What the Ladybird Heard as a stimulus for the theme.
On Monday, the children developed their descriptive language skills by writing wanted posters for the two burglars in the story, Lanky Len and Hefty Hugh! We gathered descriptive words for each of the characters and then used them to write simple sentences. The children drew some excellent pictures of the burglars and included lots of details. The posters look lovely and the sentences were really effective.
In maths this week, the children have continued with the theme of sharing, but this time by learning how to halve and quarter a shape. By folding paper circles, squares, rectangles and triangles, the children have explored how to cut these shapes into fractions. Remembering that all the pieces must be of equal size linked well to the idea that when we share we are always fair. The children enjoyed learning new vocabulary and really enjoyed the challenge of making tenths and one sixteenths!
The children have been creative this week and made their own 3D paper models of plants. We looked really carefully at all the different parts of a plant and the children were careful to include them all. We used wool for the roots and added real grass seeds in the centre of the flowers. The challenge for the children was to think about how to approach this activity and how to join all the elements together. They did really well and we now have a classroom full of little flowers.
We planted some radishes in our large planter outside Form 1 on Tuesday. The children knew all the things the radishes would need to grow and we discussed what part of the plant we would be eating when we harvested them. The children all helped to prepare the soil and sprinkle a little pinch of seeds into the planter. The children were surprised to see how tiny the seeds were compared to the beans we planted earlier in the year! Some children wanted to make signs to remind people no to touch the soil and to label what was growing. They loved visiting Mrs Tickner's office to laminate their signs, so that they are protected against the weather.
We have also learnt more about the produce that farms provide and which animals give us these things. The children sorted pictures of honey, milk, wool, cheese, ham and eggs and matched them with the animal that produced these. We also learnt about all the jobs that need to be done on a farm, such as; feeding the animals, clearing their pens, looking after the baby animals and collecting the eggs. We all agreed it would be a lot of work! We couldn't resist a little visit to the field to see how the lambs are getting on. The children noticed that not all the ewes had a lamb with them, so we hope to see more lambs in the next few weeks.
We have been discussing relationships, what this word means and all the different kinds of relationships we have with people in our lives. The children discussed and sorted healthy and unhealthy behaviours such as saying unkind words or showing forgiveness. Using puppets to act out scenarios helped the children identify some situations they may find themselves in, the feelings they may experience and what to do. The children knew it was important to speak to an adult if others' behaviour upsets them, so we can help everyone have healthy, happy relationships.
Water play continues to be popular this week and the weather has certainly lent itself to this! The children have been working collaboratively to connect the guttering so that they can pour water from a height and watch it travel all the way down to the bowl at the bottom. They have become experts in how to do this and have loved challenging themselves to fill up, carry and pour large containers of water. The children's fascination with minibeasts has developed and they have been so excited to discover centipedes, woodlice, spiders and slugs in the outside space. They were very keen to create a bug area to encourage more minibeasts to make Form 1 their home. They used bricks, logs, wood slices, bark, leaves and stones to create the perfect habitat and we hope to have lots more minibeasts living there soon.
