We are roar-some!
13 Jun 2025We started our dinosaur-themed week by asking the children to share some dino facts with the rest of the class.
Everyone was so keen to share their knowledge, and rightly so, as they knew a great deal! I was so impressed with the detail they included and the mature vocabulary that they used.
On Tuesday, we arrived at school to an egg-citing discovery, a giant egg! Transition had some really interesting thoughts about who had laid the egg, including a woodpecker, a triceratops and a tyrannosaurus rex. We kept very quiet just in case it was a T-Rex and the mother was still nearby! The children then drew a picture of what they thought was inside the egg and had a go at writing too. It was wonderful to watch some of the older children writing the whole word, while our younger children worked on forming the first letter.
After we made our predictions, we carefully carried the egg inside to help it hatch. Everyone chipped away at the egg until we discovered what was inside - two baby brachiosauruses! The discovery brought out the nurturing side of the children, who were keen to help find them some friends and get them some food. We had children on dino watch too, in case the mother returned to her egg.
Our letter sound this week was c and a popular sound, as it’s the first letter of cake. We had some other brilliant suggestions too, including carnivore, coffee and calm. The children are working hard to think of interesting words during our sound of the week and to remember to use their super fingers. Our older children have been segmenting and blending sounds, and some of them are starting to write sentences. Everyone should feel very proud of their hard work and determination.
On Wednesday, we went back in time to find out how fossils are formed, then decided to make our own. The children rolled, then flattened some clay, before using plastic dinosaurs to create footprints. We were all so pleased with how they turned out and thought they looked just like real fossils!
Our Sports Day practising is now well underway and the children are doing a fantastic job at remembering which colour team they are on, how to complete each of the races as quickly as they can and how to stay in their team’s lane!
We’ve also been practising for our Class Assembly this week. Transition has been trying hard to remember their words, and to project their voices when speaking. I am always so impressed with the children’s stage presence when performing and how clearly and confidently they say their words.
There’s been lots of time for free play too. The children have been making dinosaur skeletons from straws, drawing around dino stencils, bathing the dinosaurs in our water tray, taking care of the animals in our role-play area, building cars and rockets in the outdoor area and setting up a cinema screening on the carpet!
