World Bee Day

This week in Form 1, the children have been working really hard in preparation for our Pre-Prep Coffee Morning presentation.

Form 1 have not only been practising their lines and songs but also trying really hard to remember to use big clear speaking voices. The children have really loved this topic and I know they are super excited to share it with you all. Tuesday was World Bee Day and to mark the occasion, Form 1 enjoyed a whole bee-themed morning! The children made their own little bees using pompoms, created a hive for them to live in using large egg boxes (which they painted and added tissue to to create the nectar). The children also looked at ways to save the bees and made posters all about planting bee-friendly flowers or just being kind to them if you spot one out and about.

In literacy this week, the children created their own hive by writing bee facts on honeycomb-shaped sugar paper. Everyone was able to think of a fact about a bee’s life cycle, its body or a fact about the jobs in the hive. We then stuck them on a large piece of sugar paper to create a Form 1 hive of facts!

We started to focus on our new topic of Our Bodies later in the week and the children were fascinated to learn about their skeleton. They were full of questions about bones and their purpose and it was really interesting finding out more. The children loved drawing around each other on a large sheet of paper and then trying to draw the bones that would be in each part of their body. This led onto conversations about blood, the heart, our brains and stomachs! The children then drew the organs and learnt how these are protected by the skeleton.

In maths this week, the children have started to learn how to tell the time. We identified the face, hands and numbers on the clock and it was impressive to see how much vocabulary around this the children already have. We discussed seconds, minutes and hours, that there are 60 minutes in an hour and touched on am and pm. The children really enjoyed making their own clocks and they added the numbers in the correct position and made their own minute and hour hands using card. Once they had these elements they used a split pin to attach the hands so they had a moving clock.

This week the children have started practising their races for Sports Day! They have enjoyed Transition and Nursery joining them on the track, learning how to run inside the lines and working in their teams.
I hope all the children have a very well-deserved rest during the half-term break - they certainly deserve it!
