World Space Week
09 Oct 2026This week in Nursery, we have joined in with World Space Week.
We started the week by reading Look Up, a story that teaches us not only about comets and asteroids, but also about an amazing role model: Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space.
The children have really enjoyed our space-themed tuff tray this week. They have come up with their own stories about alien invasions and shooting stars. It also encouraged some new vocabulary, for example satellite and telescope.
We have also been getting stuck in to some paper mache this week. The children have loved getting their hands all messy whilst covering balloons in gluey paper. Once dried, we plan to paint them and make our own model solar system! Various construction toys have been used to create rockets and spaceships this week, including zoob, 2D shapes and magnets.
The children have also been practising their mathematical skills by ordering numbered aliens, and giving them the correct amount of eyes. To practise letter recognition, the children have been creating their own name rockets. We also had a wonderful group discussion one morning about what astronauts might need to take to space. We watched some videos of some astronauts who were living in the space station. We learnt about gravity and how they can't do lots of things in the same way we can on Earth, from brushing their teeth, to going to sleep! This inspired the children's ideas about what we would take with us, and they took it in turns adding their ideas to the C-Touch and sharing them with the group.
The children also, of course, joined in with our whole school Harvest Assembly this week. They all did such an amazing job of remembering all of the words and actions, and put on a wonderful performance.
We are looking forward to our Coffee Morning performance this week, and we will also be rounding up our learning on Autumn and seasonal changes. Have a lovely weekend!
