Antarctic adventures
16 Jan 2026The children’s work has taken them all over the world this week, with the introduction of topics leading them to the Amazon, Ancient Greece and Antarctica, with a few pitstops in between.
The week began with a video call to a research boat in the waters of the Southern Ocean as it approached Antarctica on an eight-week expedition. Although we joined them in the middle of the night local time, we found out that half of the boat was still awake and working on the night shift. We were introduced to lots of scientific equipment and were shown how the various drills and pistons were used to bore into the earth at the sea bed. We wish our former pupil on board the boat the best of luck with her research project, finding out about life at the bottom of the ocean.
Elsewhere, in English and maths, the class has been learning about aspects of the Amazon and Ancient Greece respectively. In English, the class has been excited to begin a project all about South America this week. Using humanities and English lessons to explore the continent, they will be focusing on the Amazon Rainforest, myths, products, plants, animals, peoples and many of the wonderful sights that South America has to offer. The project aims to develop their research skills, independent working abilities and to broaden their world view, using this diverse and vibrant continent.
In maths, they found out more about Pi and how the Ancient Greeks used it to calculate the circumference of a circle. This marks the beginning of a number of project-style tasks in maths, which aim to combine creativity and exploration with a number of mathematical concepts.
Away from the classroom, Main School were treated to another assembly by a pupil around the theme of what is your passion? This time, one of our Form 7s shared why horses are her passion and told us all lots of interesting stories and information, helping to piece together where her passion comes from and what she hopes to do with it in the future.
There was also a return to competitive fixtures for the Spring term, with matches against other schools taking place on the rugby pitch, the netball court and at the chess board.
